The Morning Stake: January 17th

Lady Raiders Host Iowa State. The Lady Raiders host the Iowa State Cyclones at 2:00 pm at the United Supermarkets Arena, the game being on FOX Sports Southwest. Iowa State is 11-4, 3-1 on the year while the Lady Raiders are 9-7, 0-5 thus far. LAJ’s Nicholas Talbot previews the game. Here’s head coach Candi Whitaker on the Cyclones:

“Iowa State lets it fly from three-point range, which isn’t much of a change from past Iowa State teams we have faced,” Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker said. “Seanna Johnson does a great job of putting the ball on the floor and attacking. She is a forward, but she has a lot of guard tendencies, which creates a tough matchup for a lot of teams.”

Men’s Tennis Starts 4-0. The men’s tennis team notches two more wins yesterday, beating New Mexico and Pacific in a double-header.

Red Raiders Fall in Last Second. I was away from home all day and didn’t get in until late, but I knew that Texas Tech played Baylor tough, but lost on a last second three-point shot by Lester Medford to win the game for the Bears. I’ve got so many other things to do, I haven’t had time to watch the game and I may not before Monday, where Texas Tech faces TCU. It’s tough to justify watching a guy-punch. As far as the Baylor game, here are your important links:

Hocutt Talks CFB Appointment.

This really is Kirby Hocutt at his best here. Talking about the process of being appointed as the College Football Playoff chairman and how he expects to fulfill that role. If you’d like the written portion, LAJ’s Don Williams recaps the press conference.

Pretty interesting that Hocutt averaged to watch 20 football games per week. That’s a lot of football.
