The Morning Stake: August 21st

Track & Field

USA’s Gil Roberts and the Bahama’s Michael Mathieu, both former Red Raider track & field runners, win medals yesterday in the 4×400 relay, with Roberts winning gold for the USA and Mathieu winning bronze. You can watch the entire race here, Roberts runs the third leg and Mathieu runs the second leg.

Soccer

The soccer team plays their second match of the season today at 7:00 pm against Missouri State at the John Walker Complex.

Volleyball

The Red Team won 4-0 yesterday. The volleyball team kicks off their season on August 26th in Portland, Oregon at the Portland State Tournament where they’ll play Colorado, Long Beach State and Portland State.

Lady Raider Basketball

The Lady Raiders move to 2-0 on their European Tour, defeating the Madrid Select team, 75-70, with freshman Brittany Brewer leading the way with 16 points and 11 rebounds:

“We went on a span where we were really clicking,” Whitaker said. “I thought we played really well together, especially when we were small, having four guards on the floor. I loved our versatility today—at times going with 2 bigs and other times having four guards. They played really well together and that’s where we were able to separate ourselves in a tight early game. I was proud of that run.”

The team will play on Tuesday in Barcelona against that city’s select team.

Day six with associate head coach Matt Corkery in Madrid.

Football

Get to know wide receiver Derrick Willies.

DMN’s Chuck Carlton has what looks like the DMN’s Big 12 preview, with all sorts of lists (we all love lists) on the best coaches, best offenses, best defenses, ranking the quarterbacks, etc. It’s Sunday, so you’ve got plenty of time to go check that out.

Last day of camp.

Congrats to Davis Webb on being voted a captin for Cal.
