Preview & Open Thread – Big 12 MBB Tournament (Quarterfinals)

Consider this post your open thread for the second day of the Big 12 tourney… let’s hope I get these predictions more accurate today than yesterday.

Game #3:

Date: Thursday, March 9th
Time: 11:30 am
Teams: #4 Iowa State vs #5 Oklahoma State
Location: Sprint Center | Kansas City
TV/Stream: ESPN2

First Regular Season Meeting:  ISU won on the road 96-86

Second Regular Season Meeting:  ISU won at home 86-83

Preview: Both of these teams are dangerous in the Big 12 tournament. ISU has won 6 of their last 7 games. OSU has had 2 streaks of winning 5 games in a row in the Big 12, but they have lost their last 2.

Prediction: It is hard to beat a conference opponent 3 times in a season, but I think that ISU is the better squad. This game may go down to the final buzzer with who can launch the last shot.

Game #4:

Date: Thursday, March 9th
Time: 1:30 pm
Teams: #1 Kansas vs #8 TCU
Location: Sprint Center | Kansas City
TV/Stream: ESPN2

First Regular Season Meeting:  KU won on the road 86-80

Second Regular Season Meeting:  KU won at home 87-68

Preview:  Kansas has only lost twice this year in the Big 12. The Jayhawks got ousted by ISU in overtime, and also by WVU. TCU had a nice first round win, but before the tourney lost 7 in a row.

Prediction: Kansas will be able to run all over TCU, even without Josh Jackson playing in the game.

Game #5:

Date: Thursday, March 9th
Time: 6:00 pm
Teams: #2 West Virginia vs #10 Texas
Location: Sprint Center | Kansas City
TV/Stream: ESPNU

First Regular Season Meeting:  WVU won on the road 74-72

Second Regular Season Meeting:  WVU won at home 77-62

Preview: “Press” Virginia is a tough team to out-hustle. They have fallen at times, and have even had rough runs against the Longhorns this season. Yet, they always come out on top. UT has nothing to lose and can go all out for this game, after having an impressive comeback win over the Red Raiders massive meltdown in the first round.

Prediction: For a strange reason, after watching UT click the way they did in the 2nd half… I feel this will be a close game. I still see WVU pulling it out in the end to move on to the next round.

Game #6:

Date: Thursday, March 9th
Time: 8:00 am
Teams: #3 Baylor vs #6 Kansas State
Location: Sprint Center | Kansas City
TV/Stream: ESPNU

First Regular Season Meeting:  Baylor won on the road 77-68

Second Regular Season Meeting:  K-State won on the road 56-54

Preview: After a strong first half of the season, Baylor finished Big 12 play with 5 wins and 5 losses in their last 10 games. K-State is fighting for their postseason lives while remaining on Bubble Watch for the NCAA tournament.

Prediction: This game means more to KSU than it does Baylor. I think it might be a tight contest, but I am pulling for the KSU upset over Baylor because I think it will happen.
