Texas Tech Golf

Terrific finish for the ladies as they finished 22nd in the NCAA Championships.

Texas Tech Basketball

Good news. Zach Smith will come back for his senior year and withdraw his name from the NBA Draft. That’s great news for a team that looks to get back to the NCAA Tournament.

Texas Tech Baseball

The latest top 25 was released and D1Baseball and BaseballAmerica have Texas Tech ranked #3 in the country, behind Oregon State and North Carolina.

Congrats to Steven Gingery and Hunter Hargrove.

Well, your starter for Wednesday against Oklahoma State is Davis Martin. That sets up really well for a four day tournament if Martin can give you a handful of innings.

Texas Tech Football

Via The Gazette, there was this bit about the current Iowa running backs and there was a mention of Derrick Mitchell and what Iowa was thinking that Mitchell would bring to the Hawkeye program last year:

Iowa also lost Derrick Mitchell. The senior graduated from Iowa and announced this week he’ll finish his college career at Texas Tech. Mitchell was always an intriguing player. It looked as if 2016 was going to be his year to carve out a bundle of touches for himself. He pretty much won the third-down role in 2015 and started there last year, but injuries and the rise of Wadley deflated thing for him. He finished 2016 with two carries for 12 yards and six catches for 24 yards. He didn’t log any stats in the final six games.

Here’s how Texas Tech’s offense could go this fall: Former Iowa QB Nic Shimonek faking a handoff to Mitchell and then hitting former Iowa receiver Derrick Willies on a play-action (I’m not sure Tech bothers with play-action, but you get my point).

I don’t know how Texas Tech will use Mitchell, but Iowa saw him as a third down running back. I’d guess that if Justin Stockton is hurt, then Mitchell could slide into that third down role and Mitchell already has the body to block on third down as well.
