A-J Media’s Don Williams writes about Nik Shimonek taking the heat as the quarterback for the team:

“I think I’ve done a good job,” he said. “Whenever you start the season 3-and-0, you’re the greatest. Whenever you lose a couple, it’s like you’re the worst player on the team.

“In here, in this building, we know what we’re capable of. Usually the naysayers and things like that are people on the outside, so I don’t put a lot of stock into that. I’m not losing any sleep over it, and I’m having fun with the guys that I’ve been training with for the last three or four years.

“So no matter what they say about me, whenever I leave here, I gave everything I had and I had a good time doing it, so I won’t have any regrets.”

A-J Media’s Don Williams has a football notebook that notes, as seen above, that Texas Tech is bringing back the Saddle Trophy. The trophy is new, made by M.L. Leddy, which I’m guessing you guys will know who that is . . . Kinda funny question to Shimonek as to who would be most likekly to cry on Saturday as it is senior day and he said Dylan Cantrell, Zach Barnes and Talor Nunez . . . Also in the notebook is that Gary Patterson said that leading rusher Darius Anderson is out, QB Kenny Hill went from questionable to probably and also game-time decisions are LB Travin Howard, LB Montrel Wilson and S Nico Small . . . I’d guess they all play because they’re playing to play in the Big 12 Championship game, but who knows . . .

RedRaiderSports’ Brandon Soliz has takeaways from the media availability of Cantrell, DS Kyle Heffron and DL Talor Nunez:

– Nuñez said at one point he was roommates with both Cantrell and Barnes. He said since he got married that Cantrell will stay over every once and awhile to watch shows on Netflix. His one show recommendation is This Is Us.

– Here is what Nuñez had to say about his bond with Cantrell and Barnes and his time at Tech.

– “We just started hanging out together,” Nuñez said. “I was a walk-on and I wanted to be around good people. Of course, Dylan was that guy and he was already playing when we first came in. I redshirted. Zach was playing as well so I wanted to be like them. Eventually we just became best of friends … Really got to know them a lot over these past four years and I can truly say they’re some of my best friends.”
