Gibbs on the Move? Yesterday’s report stated that Arizona State head coach Herm Edwards is targeting David Gibbs as the defensive coordinator, original reported by FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman. A-J Media’s Don Williams noted that the longest that Gibbs has ever stayed in one spot is three years, as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Golden Gophers nearly 20 years ago. I personally can’t get a good feel for what will happen. I do think that Gibbs is transient by nature and he doesn’t like to set down roots, or at least he has not previously. But he’s got young kids and they’re all in school and maybe that makes a difference this time around.

David Collier then tweeted the following yesterday evening.

I’d expect Texas Tech to move pretty quickly on this, but it will essentially be up to Gibbs to accept any offer and that may not happen until after the bowl game, which is December 23rd.

James Decommits. Receiver Jabari James decommitted and committed to Tulsa yesterday. I’ve heard that James may have some grade issues and was somewhat expected.

Coaching Moves. Trey Haverty has been hired on as an assistant at SMU with new SMU coach Sonny Dykes. Haverty had been at Texas as a defensive assistanat (not an assistant coach, but quality control I think). Additionally, it was reported that Joe Robinson will join the new staff at UTEP, where Dama Dimel, is the new head coach. Dimel was the offensive coordinator at Kansas State for a handful of years and was named the UTEP head coach last week I think.

Interviews. Interesting article from AL.com’s John Talty about how coaching interviews can sink or swim a coaching candidate. The reason I’m linking here is that Leach interviewed at Maryland right after he was terminated at Texas Tech and the interview did not go as planned:

“I’ve interviewed a lot of people for jobs in my career,” said a member of Maryland’s search committee, “and that was one of the more bizarre interviews. You’d ask him a question, and he would just start talking and keep talking…you are sitting there thinking when is he going to get to the answer? And then he says, ‘Oh wait, I’m rambling. What was the question again?”

Miscellaneous . . . The AP has a reason to watch every bowl game, including South Florida vs. Texas Tech and they say to watch because of Quinton Flowers . . . Heartland College Sports’s Derek Duke has a look at Texas Tech recruiting and a wishlist, but I don’t know that this gives you a lot of insight on where Texas Tech is headed . . . Sports On Earth’s Matt Brown picks all of the bowl games and picks South Florida to win by 6 . . .
