Texas Tech to Hire Clay Jennings and Brett Dewhurst

It was reported by RedRaiderSports’ Will McKay on the Twitter that Texas Tech will hire Houston’s Clay Jennings, currently at Houston as the secondary coach and Brett Dewhurst, the defensive backs coach at Southeastern Louisiana.

Jennings most recent resume includes 2017 at Houston, 2016 at Texas, 2014-2015 at Arkansas, 2008-2013 at TCU and 2007 at Baylor. That’s not a bad resume in terms of coaching at some decent programs. This past year, Houston was 67th overall in Passing S&P+; however, if you are into traditional stats, Houston was 120th overall in pass defense, but was 23rd in interceptions with 15 on the year.

Dewhurst is a bit of a different situation in that he was with David Gibbs for a long time in Houston, and then spent two years with Texas Tech as a defensive graduate assistant in Gibbs first two years at Texas Tech. Dewhurst played for Texas Tech from 2008 through 2011.

These hires replace Karl Scott, who left to go to Louisiana as their defensive coordinator and I’d guess that Dewhurst is the 10th assistant perhaps (maybe Dewhurst becomes the special teams coach to an extent?). This brings the total coaches to 7 (David Gibbs, Zac Spavital, Terrance Jamison, Clay Jennings, Brett Dewhurst, Emmett Jones and Brandon Jones) with 3 to hire.
