Best Freshman Moments by the Freshmen. I think that Malik Ondigo is a great personality and he seems like a happy person.

Notebook. A-J Media’s Carlos Silva, Jr. attended media day yesterday and has a notebook of yesterday’s press conference, focusing on how the freshman need to play like seniors as they face Press Virginia on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. The most important thing to me was the injury update of Zach Smith, who didn’t play against Oklahoma and Justin Gray only played 1 minute in the second half against the Sooners:

It marked the first time Smith did not play in a game since a home game against UTSA back on Dec. 7, 2016.

“He’s been to multiple doctors, looking at everything we possibly can for him,” Beard said of Smith, who is listed as “day-to-day.”

Justin Gray, who only played one minute in the second half of a loss to Oklahoma earlier in the week, was given the same status as Smith.

“Justin’s kind of day-to-day, as are a lot of our players this time of year,” Beard said. “I wish that he could have played more in the Oklahoma game, but he had a knee get a little tight on him. But he’s worked really hard the last couple of days. If I was a betting man, which I’m not, I would say that Justin Gray will play on Saturday. He’ll be ready.”

Possible Return for Zach Austin. A-J Media’s Don Williams tweeted that Zach Austin is attempting to continue to try to play for Texas Tech. Austin last played in 2015, suffered a knee injury that kept him off the field for all of 2017. I think he would maybe have to apply for a medical redshirt to be eligible, but that would seem like a pretty easy decision for the NCAA to grant.

Early Big 12 Power Rankings. FWST’s Carlos Mendez has his all-too-early Big 12 power rankings and has Texas Tech 7th overall, behind OU, WVU, TCU, ISU, UT, and OSU:

7. The Jet Duffey era finally appears at hand for the TEXAS TECH RED RAIDERS after a freshman year marred by a suspension and a redshirt last season. The former Mansfield Lake Ridge star is a fast game-breaker out of the pocket. The Raiders lose their top running back, Justin Stockton. Defensively, the Red Raiders made modest strides last year and will likely continue an upward arc with the return of their leading tackler, linebacker Dakota Allen.

Miscellaneous. According to Mandy Knight on Twitter, Texas Tech will add, most likely as a walk-on, quarterback Kyle Jones from Mary-Hardin-Baylor. Jones started 4 games and threw 9 touchdowns to 4 picks and 1,162 yards . . . via Ian Rapoport tweets that Baylor coach Matt Rhule was either turned down for the Indianapolis Colts or the Colts turned him down, as he has elected to stay at Baylor. I’ll let you choose . . . in shocking Big 12 news, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy has fired defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer, the long-time DC for the Cowboys . . .
