New Lady Raiders head coach Marlene Stollings arrived in Lubbock and met with the media yesterday afternoon in her introductory press conference as the new head coach. A-J Media’s Mike Graham reported on the presser and Stollings writes that she wants to return Lady Raider basketball to their former glory:

She left the the stability she created at Minnesota, and the amenities of Minneapolis, for a more than minor rebuild project at a school that once spoiled her national championship viewing night.

“The reason I was sold is because we share the same vision for this program,” Stollings said in reference to athletics director Kirby Hocutt. “We share a vision of winning again. Winning Big 12 titles. Again. And winning a national championship. Again. We all know this program has done it, and I’ve taken this job believing we, all of us, will do it again.”

A crowd of about 300, including seven current members of the Lady Raiders team, bought into the pitch and interrupted Stollings’ speech with a standing ovation.

Texas Tech Baseball

Congrats to Davis Martin who was spotlighted by D1Baseball as part of the Golden Spikes Awaard nominee (via D1Baseball):

Rising to the occasion is just part of Martin’s DNA, and it’s precisely why he’s one of the best and most feared arms in the game.

“Well, what’s the saying, pressure is a choice. He wants the ball every time we play and he’d take it from you if you gave it to him,” Tadlock said. “He’s an absolute guy and he’s got what you need to win. He’s been that way ever since he stepped on campus.

“There’s a reason we were in line to get him out of high school,” he continued. “We were very fortunate that he and his family trusted us enough to get him. It’s been a lot of fun to watch, that’s for sure.”

Tariq Owens made it official yesterday and signed an Athletic Scholarship Agreement with Texas Tech (via official site).

Jon Rothstein reported that Duke and Texas Tech would play at Madison Square Garden in December of this year (via Twitter). KAMC’s David Collier asked Hocutt about this game and t’s are being crossed and i’s are being dotted:

“The contracts are being reviewed and we fully anticipate that to become a reality in the future,” Hocutt said Wednesday. “What a chance to play a historic basketball program like Duke in maybe our country’s most historic basketball venue.”

This seems impossible as Luke Adams, the former player and son of Mark Adams, was named as the new head coach at New Meico Junior College (via MRT). It seems impossible because it seems like Adams just graduated a year or two ago and in all honesty, he’s only 25 and already the coach at a junior college. I was going to law school, drinking a few beers at Mongo’s and playing lots of Golden tee when I was 25.

Recent graduate Cameron Batson became a member of the Hampshire Honor Society, which goes to football student-athletes who maintain a 3.2 GPA through their college careers (via official site). Congrats to Cameron, what a terrific honor!
