A-J Media’s Don Williams has a football notebook from yesterday’s media availability. I’ve got a quote board going up here shortly with the thought that quarterback Alan Bowman is still in the hospital, hopefully getting out today, and that means that it is very likely that Jett Duffey is the starter on Saturday against Texas. Also of note is that the refs penalized West Virginia for the “horns down” and Kingsbury said that they’ve addressed that last year so I’m guessing that won’t happen this year. I don’t think I’ve ever done the “horns down” sign, I’m a guns-up only sort of guy. And the coaching staff wants to maintain the redshirt on Brayden Stringer so that he’ll be a junior next year, and he’ll have one more game that he can play:

Kingsbury said his staff remains committed to redshirting backup linebacker Brayden Stringer, even with Dakota Allen questionable with the left-knee injury he suffered last week.

Stringer, a junior, can play in one more game before reaching the new NCAA limit of playing in four games while maintaining a redshirt year. If Allen’s out, Riko Jeffers joins Jordyn Brooks as the starting linebacker tandem and Kingsbury said Christian Taylor and Ja’Quay Pough will be the backups. Taylor has played in five games, but missed time recently with a broken hand.

“We’re going to do what’s best for Brayden,” Kingsbury said. “If we’ve got to use that one game this week, then we’ll find a way for him to keep his redshirt and mix in … Christian should be back soon, and Pough will have some games to use.”

Stringer was forced to play two years ago as a true freshman when the Red Raiders had few options with one of the FBS’ worst defenses.

A-J media’s Don Williams talked with senior safety John Bonney, who transferred from Texas to Texas Tech during the summer:

“I never thought my senior night would be here, against my old school,” Bonney said Tuesday. “But once the ball’s kicked, it’s time to go straight to football, so I have to be able to control my emotions and compartmentalize everything and understand when it’s time to get ready and focus on the football aspect.”
