Game Recap

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Well, this is easy. Jarrett Culver. 12 of 13 from the floor, 2 of 3 from the three-point line, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 turnover. 30 points.

Defender of the Game: Matt Mooney was arguably the second best player on the court today, finishing with 14 points, but he also had 3 steals, which is pretty impressive.

Multi-Purpose Player of the Game: Let’s go with Kyler Edwards who had 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, a steal and 1 turnover.

Game Notes:

  • That old school double-t looked amazing in the center of the court.
  • Culver was absolutely unbelievable. Perhaps his best game he’s ever played wearing the red and black and I don’t think that’s hyperbole. His first half alone was worthy of a single game, 20 points on 8 of 9 4 boards and 3 assists, but he’d add on 10 more in the second half. And truthfully, Culver’s ability to facilitate when he’s double-teamed may be the trait that will translate at the pro level and push him towards elite level. He’s already an elite scorer and in this offense, he’s had to learn how to play patient offense.
  • A good portion of the first half was pretty close. ACU was hitting shots and keeping the score within 4 to 6 or so and with about 6 minutes left, Texas Tech would start to pull away and ACU started to miss some of their shots.
  • Abilene Christian would hit 37% of their shots in the first half and in the second half the defense would tighten significantly, allowing the Wildcats to only make 19% of their shots.
  • The Texas Tech offense was actually very efficient in the first half, only 2 turnovers and 52% from the field (it helps a lot when Culver is going off) and then you just have your teammates go ahead and put you ahead even more as the Red Raiders poured it on in the second half, making 59% of their buckets, including 5 of 11 from the three-point line.
  • I thought that the defensive hustle plays by pretty much everyone was pretty great. From Odiase, to Edwards, Mooney, Owens, you name it, I thought that the small plays led to dunks and terrific opportunities on the offensive end for the Red Raiders.
  • Deshawn Corprew continues his terrific play, he missed all 3 of his three-point shots, but he finished with 8 rebounds, leading the team, 2 assists, 1 turnover and 4 points.
  • Brandone Francis is in a bad way right now. He’s got a hitch in his shot, he’s over-thinking his shot and just clanking things off of the rim. Francis was 0-7 last night and he’s better than that. I’d like to think that maybe the break will do him some good, but he needs to get right and I’d tell him not to worry about the three-point shots, which he loves to take.
  • Matt Mooney’s 5 turnovers were half of the team’s total of 10 and most of them were his attempt at facilitating the offense, some miscues to Corprew or Owens, just a little sloppy (he had one called against him for an offensive foul that wasn’t an offensive foul, just a bad call). He’ll need to be much better against Duke.
  • Texas Tech is 10-0, the first time since the 1929-1930 season and will be on their way to New York City on Thursday to take on Duke. Just flipping amazing.
