Texas Tech 7, Kansas State 4. The Red Raiders defeated K-State 7-4 in the first round of the Big 12 Championship and will now face West Virginia today at 4:00 p.m. and the Mountaineers are starting Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, Alek Manoah, so good times.

Stock Report. D1Baseball thinks that with yesterday’s win, Texas Tech is securely in as a national seed:

We’re ready to move Texas Tech into the “secure” category after the Raiders won their Big 12 tournament opener. TTU’s regular-season title in the Big 12 carries a lot of weight, and it remains No. 9 in the RPI, with a 15-6 record against the top 50 and a sterling 29-12 mark against the top 100.

Texas Tech Basketball

Smith Official. In short work, forward Tyreek Smith has officially signed with the Texas Tech Red Raiders, didn’t know he was originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but last year he played at Texas Christian School in Cedar Hill.

Zhaire Smith Update. The Inquirer’s Mike Sielski checks in on Chris Beard who was checking in on Zhaire Smith, who had an allergic reaction that nearly put him on death’s door:

“It was the ultimate adversity,” Beard said in a recent phone interview. “He handles adversity. The people of Philadelphia obviously got to see that in a life-or-death situation. I’m talking about basketball, but now people have seen the side of him where, things that are a lot more important than basketball, he was able to overcome.

“I have zero doubts of Zhaire Smith. He’s special. He’s guided by a different compass. He’s going to be a longtime, big-time NBA player. There’s no such thing as pressure when you start talking about guys like Zhaire Smith. Pressure is opportunity. Pressure’s a blessing, and this is who Z is.”

NBC Sports Top 25. NBC Sports’ Rob Dauster has his preseason top 25 rankings and has Texas Tech at No. 10 and he predicts the starting five is as follows: Jahmius Ramsey, Davide Moretti, Deshawn Corprew, T.J. Holyfield, and Chris Clarke. I think the biggest decision will be at the other guard spot along Moretti and Kyler Edwards may get the starting nod as I think he’s a better shooter than Ramsey (I believe).
