Big 12 Athlete of the Year Nominees. Congrats to Karli Hamilton and Divine Oduduru for being nominated as the Big 12 athletes of the year nominees. So each athletic department nominates two student-athletes and then I think the Big 12 chooses the eventual winners.

2019 Preseason All-Big 12. The Big 12 (pdf) announced their 2019 media preseason All-Big 12 team and two Red Raiders made the team, Jack Anderson at offensive line, and Adrian Frye at defensive back. Heartland College Sports has their preseason All-Big 12 team and three Red Raiders make the list, Anderson, Frye, and linebacker Jordyn Brooks.

Position Rankings. LandGrant Gauntlet’s Josh Cowan is running down position groups in the Big 12 and ranks the offensive line and wide receivers and tight ends. Texas Tech is 4th in the offensive line rankings and 5th for the receivers.

ESPY Nominee for Best Male Athlete. Patrick Mahomes has been nominated as the best male athlete for the ESPY’s which I think are tonight. I have no idea if you can actually still vote, and I’m ready to do away with fan voting, which is just a popularity contest. So when there’s some sort of fan voting for some prestigious award, like the Bowerman in T&F and Oduduru, there is no way that fans should have a say in who wins because you’re just going to pick the guy from your school with little thought at all into actually looking at the other candidates, doing some research, weighing your options, and then making your selection. That’s not happening, which is fine, but making a fan vote have any weight in an actual award that means something (like the Bowerman, not necessarily the ESPY) feels cheap.

More on Minor and Frank. RedRaiderSports’ Matt Clare talked with newest and 12th commit Kobee Minor about committing to Texas Tech and his contact with Texas Tech coaches:

“I talk with the head coach Matt Wells every day,” Minor said. “I also talked with Coach (Kerry) Cooks) and Coach (Julius) ‘Juice’ Brown every day. It was one of them reaching out every day and that stood out to me, it really caught my eye. The amount of attention, the mail coming in every day and the daily contact made me feel very comfortable with the Tech coaching staff.”

RedRaiderSports’ Ben Golan talked with the 11th commit, defensive back Ryan Frank about committing to Texas Tech:

“When I went on my visit up there everything was great,” Frank said. “Tech has always been one of my dream schools and when I went on my visit and saw everything, how it was a family environment, that attracted me more. All the coaches are real, they’re straight up with you and don’t sugarcoat anything. That’s what I wanted. I can trust all the coaches, on my visit just talking to them it felt like family. I wanted to go somewhere where I could feel comfortable for the next 4-5 years and that’s Tech.”

There’s lots more there in both posts, so make sure and check them out.
