Crabtree Matches Scholarship Position Endowment

Congrats to Michael Crabtree who has matched a $100,000 scholarship position endowment which will fully endow a scholarship in his name and go to a receiver each year. The scholarship was started by the good folks over at RedRaiderSports.com, in particular Terry Fuller of the Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex, who I think (I’m a little confused by the story) contributed $200,000 along with other members of the RedRaiderSports.com community.

Here’s Michael Crabtree:

“Texas Tech will always be home to me,” said Crabtree, who has caught 633 passes for more than 7,400 yards during his 10-year NFL career. “The game of football has blessed my family, and I couldn’t be prouder to now give back to hopefully make that same type of impact on fellow Red Raiders for years to come.”

And athletic director Kirby Hocutt on the commitment of Crabtree:

“When you think of the all-time greats at the wide receiver position in college football, Michael Crabtree immediately jumps to the top of any list,” Director of Athletics Kirby Hocutt said. “Michael Crabtree’s success as a Red Raider is unmatched, and we couldn’t be more fortunate that he has invested in our football program and the experience of so many future student-athletes with this commitment.”

I think it is absolutely fantastic that Texas Tech has an endowed scholarship, a scholarship that will pay for itself for the foreseeable future, never needing to dip into the athletic budget for that amount is pretty terrific. I’ll never forget that first game at SMU (I think) and I happened to be there and I’m pretty sure my jaw was on the floor after watching that game, 12 catches for 106 yards and 3 touchdowns and Crabtree never looked back.
