Texas Tech Football Notebook: Bowman in the Lead; Vasher Focusing on Academics

Good morning. Another non-transcript for you to read (and watch if you have 40 minutes). I honestly didn’t find Chadarius Townsend and Brandon Boyer-Randle as engaging as someone like Adrian Frye from Saturday so to be perfectly honest, I sort of lost interest as their answers were pretty short and there wasn’t a ton of insight there. That’s not a shot at them individually, but there just wasn’t a lot to discuss with their answers.

The big news in listening to Wells was that Alan Bowman is very much in the lead at the quarterback spot and Wells said that Maverick McIvor needs to play with a sense of urgency. I think that’s a pretty clear bit of direction for McIvor.

Also, T.J. Vasher is still taking care of academics, so that’s a bit of a concern as he’s missing practice time.

Head Coach Matt Wells

Has applied for a waiver and would be immediately eligible and have 2 years. [Re. Henry Columbi]

Ja’Lynn Polk, the young wideouts are talented, all 4 freshmen, have had 17 practices with OTA’s and they’ve done a nice job. Reserve to make a comment on the OL and DL. Eric Monroe, Cam Watts, Adrian Frye, Alex Hogan have all impressed and catching my eye. All skill guys, those practices are geared towards those guys. We’ll have a better idea as to the linebackers and lines this week.

Alan is in the lead, very confident and further along in the offense, which we knew, it takes reps in this offense. maverick needs more reps. Henry needs more reps, he’s had reps in this offense, and the young guys are still the young guys. Maverick has to continue to understand there is a sense of urgency and there’s ground to make up, it is up to Alan to earn his reps, or the other guy is giving them away.

The return spots, haven’t done a lot of team, the punt returners will be Chux [Nwabuko], Adrian Frye, Zech McPhearson, Myles Price, he’s dangerous, KeSean, Chaddarius, Caden Leggett, just not a lot of team-work on special teams just yet.

[John Holcomb] doesn’t make any big mistakes, he knows what to do, doesn’t get yelled out for being at the wrong spot, the two guys who have to adjust the most are the tight end and the H. John is smart, he is tough, and he can catch, have to see how he holds up blocking, he’s done a nice job, he’s steady, even though he’s only 17.

I wanted to move him back to get his confidence back, he can play multiple spots, it is done in an attempt to get our better players on the field [Could not hear the question, believe it is Adrian Frye]. Adrian can play the cover safety, DeMarcus Fields is getting work at cornerback. Dadrion Taylor is getting work at cornerback and has looked good. I think we’re going to need that this season, and the Coronavirus, so there may be a week or two that they may have to play a different position and it makes us more versitle.

[T.J. Vasher] He’s still out taking care of academics.

Loic [Fouonji] has a bright future, great family, Tech legacy, tremendous high school program in Midland Lee. He’s tough and tough-minded, he is a multiple sport athlete. He is steady, he is a bit of an old soul, and I respect, I love the kid to death. He’s going to play this year, it is up to Loic to define that role.

We’ll being shells tomorrow, full pads on Wednesday and Friday and scrimmage on Saturday morning.

Some good live reps in the stadium, the younger guys, the refs on the field, and who can play in the limelight, get a gauge on who can play and go about 90 reps. Get some good evaluation out of it.

Vasher has been out for some of the walk-throughs, he needs to take care of his academics, just like everyone else.

Seth [Collins] can play X and Z, he can play inside, he’s been in Luke Wells meeting room this spring, he’s outside know. Need to keep him healthy and see him play. Erik [Ezukanma] is going to have a good sophomore year. The freshmen Loic, J.J. Sparkman has a lot of competitiveness he’s surprised me. Myles Price, the inside receiver. The freshmen are not disappointing, KeSean Carter has picked up where we left off. [Dalton] Rigdon, [McLane] Mannix, nursing an injury, I’m happy with the receivers.

We rotate, not just two guys gets it at Z, Cleveland, Loic, JJ, all of those guys, The X is EZ, Leggett, Polk, sometimes Polk runs with the 1’s. They are going to earn their reps and roles. We’ll see.

I’ve seen good things out of Jack Anderson, he’s smart, mature, takes care of his body, he really cares, he wants to be an elite player and play in the NFL, I see that in his future, he’s played more center in this camp, that will help us and him, I’ve been very pleased with Jack.

Like I said earlier, we’ll know more about the offensive line later this week, you return Dawson and Wright and Jack inside. I think you have guys battling, Adams, Berger, Peterson, Farrar, Carde, and then the freshman that is a surprise is Caleb Rogers, he has not disappointed, he is smart and we’ll have a better physical evaluation at the end of the week.

We have a lot of talented people behind the scenes that do a great job of highlighting payers, through graphic design and players and that is their job. They do an excellent job of knowing the players and the person behind the facemask and telling their story. Football is a difficult sport to tell a story because of the gear, our sports information department does a great job.

We have good players back there. I’ll let you know on Sunday or Monday, we have talented guys there, and personnel move. Tahj Brooks does not look like a true freshman, Townsend is a talented young man and will prove to be good for him. White was the position move in the spring, there is a cluster and their job to get out of it and SaRodorick’s job is to distance the group. We can ride him and I think he has a bright future. Someone has to pull out of that mix and my guess is we’ll play a couple of them early on.

It was a Guns and Roses remix, as loud as we can, and the crowd noise [or lack thereof] has zero effect on our offense.

Running Back Chaddarius Townsend

Just attack every paly and play fast with confidence.

Thsi offense I’m catching on fast, quicker than at Alabama.

Coach Smith breaks it down simply, he knows hwo i learn and I go out on the field and attack it.

The opportunity, they would give me an opportunity to play where I wanted to play.

Mainly the opportunity, I was looking for receiver and running back, just looking for the best fit for me.

Wells and the staff were hitting me up, day after day, and they showed that they needed me here.

Really the whole staff, SaRodorick and Xavier White have helped me outside of football, just to get me comfortable around Lubbock.

The virtual visits was a challenge, because you can’t tell what the campus was. At the end of the day, I needed to hear what I wanted to hear to make a decision.

My drive, I try to come with the attitude to stay focused.

I try to be versatile, I can do the swing routes, I have great hands. I think ht helps well.

Everyone is out grinding. It’s a great team.

Linebacker Brandon Boyer-Randle

I talked to multiple coaches and who I felt comfortable with. My relationship with Wells because I had played against Utah State and they had seen me live. I felt that connection.

Had a couple of other Big Ten and Pac 12, Oklahoma State and Utah, Purdue, I had different options from different conferences from Power 5 programs.

For me, the Big 12 is known for explosive offensive players, and I do want to bring it to Texas Tech, that’s what I’ve talked with KP, me being a defensive guy I bring that pride with me.

KP you can tell he cares for everyone on the defense and brings energy and that brings out the best in everyone, when it is a guy that you trust, you’ll play as hard as you can and trust the defense and staff.

I try to pride myself on being a tough guy, try not to let elements phase me, so I try not to let the heat or the cold or elements of weather get to me.
