Post-Game Thoughts: Texas Tech 77, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi 57

Game Links:

Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Going with Terrence Shannon, who returned after sitting out the last game with 15 points on 5 of 10, 7 boards, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a ton of hard work. Loved having him back.

The Motion:

  • Congrats to head coach Chris Beard who won his 100th game at Texas Tech. A huge accomplishment and I’m appreciative of every one of those wins. Consider where Texas Tech was before Beard arrived, a team struggling to punch up, and he’s turned it into a national powerhouse. Don’t ever forget that you get to witness it.

“100 wins means you had great players.”

  • Kind of a weird game offensively in that there were times it looked really disjointed, but the team had 19 assists on 27 made shots, so they were definitely sharing the ball and that’s a good thing. The downside is that this team didn’t shoot particularly well against a team that’s not very good defensively, only 40% from the floor and 24% from the three-point line.
  • Part of the issues is that ever since Mac McClung got his haircut (which was before the Abilene Christian game), he’s not been shooting the ball particularly well. McClung was 2 of 10 from the floor with only 5 points, but he was absolutely dialed in as he led the team with 6 assists and no turnovers. Finding a way to contribute is a good thing for sure, but McClung needs to be an offensive threat.
  • Very nice to see Micah Peavy get back on track. He looked really smooth offensively, he was leading some pick-and-rolls that looked really good, had 5 rebounds, and 2 assists, as well as half of the team’s turnovers. that last part is a loaded statement because the team only had 4 turnovers, so that’s absolutely terrific.
  • Marcus Santos-Silva was really active offensively and on the offensive side of the boards. Really everyone was, but Santos-Silva seemingly was tipping rebounds all night with the hopes of getting second shots and that was huge. Texas Tech had 23 second chance points and a ridiculous 24 offensive rebounds.
  • TAMU-CC had .891 points per possession, so it wasn’t the typically suffocating defense that we’re used to. In fact, TAMU-CC shot better than Texas Tech, 44% from the field and 41% from the three-point line. The problem was that Texas Tech had so many second chance points.
  • Some stats. The bench mob returned with 24 points and the offense scored on 1.242 points per possessions. As mentioned above, the offense only had 4 turnovers all game with 19 assists. Texas Tech was also heavy in the paint, as mentioned previously, the team had 24 offensive rebounds, 43 total rebounds, and 42 points in the paint. Texas Tech shot 34% in the 1st half and 44% in the second. Neither half produced more than 2 three-point shots and the Red Raiders didn’t shoot well either half. Texas Tech was a bit off from the line, 63% for the game and that’s not really very good.
  • I may be in the minority, but I think that Tyreek Smith does good things when he’s in the game. He’s a bit wild, but I really like what he does.
  • Love that Clarence Nadolny hit two three’s in mop-up duty. If he’s a reliable shooter then that’s great. We just don’t get to see that very often.
  • Head coach Chris Beard:

“We’re getting balance and are one of the highest assists teams in the country right now,” Beard said. “I thought we shared the ball today, highlighted by how Mac was handling the game. I think our offense has shown some diversity. We’re a work in progress and I like how our guys are continuing to get better.”

  • Up next? Kansas in Lubbock on Thursday. It’s here.
