Texas Tech Football: A New Hire and Some Highlights

I wrote last week about the democratization of the media, that with the pandemic, the Texas Tech athletic department would release some sort of media, whether it be press conferences or some highlights, I’d take that and do a non-transcript if it was a press conference and you all would win because you didn’t have to subscribe for any content. Well, yesterday was one of those days where all three major Texas Tech publications, Avalanche-Journal, Red Raider Sports, and Inside the Red Raiders, have updates on practice. There’s no press conference on YouTube, so unfortunately, dear reader, I can’t help today. More than likely, the press conference will be released later this morning, so you’ll be a day behind so it is likely not the end of the world, but that’s the nitty-gritty.

RedRaiderSports’ Matt Clare talked with head coach Matt Wells about how the virtual visits are working. This was informative and how it all works, at the very least some insight about the new recruiting process with recruiting around Covid. I think it is clear that the Zoom visits are here to stay, but I hope that he recruiting opens up in June.

There were a couple of housekeeping things to take care of. Matt Wells hired Jessica Hryn as Director of On-Campus Recruiting. Hryn was previously at Temple where she was essentially in charge of everything recruiting:

Hryn, who arrives in Lubbock following two seasons in a similar capacity at Temple, will oversee many of the recruiting functions regarding campus visits from prospective student-athletes, including the planning of all travel, accommodations, meals, meetings, tours and activities. She will also coordinate the gameday experience for all recruits traveling to campus on home football weekends.

“We’re excited to welcome Jessica to the Red Raider family,” Wells said. “Her experience will only add to our recruiting team. We look forward to welcoming recruits back to our campus soon, and Jessica will play an important part in that transition.”

I believe that Hryn replaces Christina DeRuyter.

This is one of those behind-the-scene guys that you would normally never hear of, but Chris Velasquez was named the Big 12 Conference Video Coordinator of the Year. It’s always awesome to see someone excel at their job, so congrats to Chris!

Texas Tech’s newest Director of Recruiting, Eron Hodges, has put some interesting stuff out there on Twitter so if this is your thing, I’d give him a follow.

Here are some tweets.
