Starting 5

1. Stats. TAMU-CC is another not-so-good team and this shouldn’t be all that close. The Islanders (I do love that nickname) are not a good shooting team and they turn the ball over a ton, but they do go to the line at an incredibly high rate, 31st in the nation. On the other end of the court, the Islanders are okay defensively, well, they’re better on defense than on offense. They forced quite a few turnovers, enough to be in the top 100 of that category, 76th overall, so you can probably expect a pretty aggressive defense. They’ve also done a good job of limiting offensive boards, so not a ton of second chance points.

2. Scouting. Francois is the best player, is a good-shooting big-man, but doesn’t really take outside shots. He’s actually got a nice assist rate and is decent at blocking shots. Smith also has a decent assist rate as well as steal rate, and is a decent shooter so long as he’s inside the three-point line. Other guys really struggle to stand-out, at least the guys that get the bulk of the minutes. I see this as being a really tough defensive team and that’s what their head coach, Willis Wilson, wants on the court. No one is a good three-point shooter other than Javae Lampkins, and he didn’t play in their last game.

3. How They Match Up. TAMU-CC is a small team, not that Texas Tech is big by any means. I don’t see a ton of match-up problems for Texas Tech. I think that Texas Tech should be able to take advantage of the TAMU-CC guards and guarding the perimeter shouldn’t be a huge concern as they haven’t shown the ability to hit really anything deep.

4. Tweet of the Day.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

The No. 17-ranked Red Raiders (5-1) are on a three-game winning streak after a 51-44 win over Abilene Christian (5-1) on Wednesday following victories over Troy and Grambling. A&M-Corpus Christi comes into the game with a 1-4 record after back-to-back losses to UTRGV in a South Texas home-and-away series. The Islanders are on a four-game losing streak after opening with a win over Texas A&M International.

Chris Beard is one win from 100 in his Texas Tech head coaching career after earning win No. 99 on Wednesday against the Wildcats. In his fifth year leading the program, Beard won his first game as the Red Raider head coach with a 93-67 victory over Houston Baptist on Nov. 11, 2016. Since then, Beard has led the program to the 2018 NCAA Elite 8, 2019 Big 12 regular-season championship, 2019 NCAA Championship Final and 99-45 overall record. He was named the 2019 Associated Press National Coach of the Year and the 2018 and 2019 Big 12 Coach of the Year. He is 195-75 (72.2 win percentage) in his ninth year as a NCAA head coach.
