Things got pretty newsy while I was away and honestly, I almost forgot to post an open thread, which would have resulted in a broken streak. Yo’s team went 4-0 for the weekend (this was an Under Armour weekend for seeding purposes for the national tournaments). His team is good enough to beat almost any team with kids who are actually 13U, but when you get reclassified kids playing down (8th graders reclassifying as 7th graders) then they’re just not strong enough.
On the Diamond
You don’t need me to tell you that Texas Tech softball is in the NCAA Women’s College World Series. This is the bracket as Texas Tech will face Ole Miss on Thursday, May 29th at 6:00 p.m. and the game on ESPN2. Texas Tech is in the same bracket as Oregon and UCLA, which means that this is a double-elimination bracket until the Championship Finals, which would happen the first full week of June and simply be a 3-game series. The other bracket consists of Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Oklahoma and Texas Tech won’t play the winner of that bracket until that Championship round, should they get that far.
On Saturday, Texas Tech baseball announced the resignation of pitching coach Matt Gardner. This was definitely a point of emphasis for Texas Tech baseball, something that may have happened not soon enough. Tadlock is incredibly loyal, maybe to a fault. I’ll be incredibly interested to see where Texas Tech and Tadlock look for Gardner’s replacement.
On the Links
Texas Tech golf had a terrific 3rd round yesterday, jumping 11 spots and pushing them into 8th place heading into the 4th round of stroke play as a team. Charlie DeLong and Calum Scott led the way and went 3-under par and 1-under par respectively. I would tell you when they start the 4th round, but I’ve messed up the times of events recently. All of the info is at the link.
On the Gridiron
When I last left this situation, it was reported that Ted Cruz had stopped the Presidential Commission that Cody Campbell was a part of, in part because it was believed that the SEC and Big Ten had made their opinion known that they did not prefer a more equitable model, but rather a model that really only favored those 2 conferences and no one else. I thought that the SEC and Big Ten had leaned pretty heavily on Cruz and now it appears that Campbell has maybe leaned in a bit more. I wrote at the time, “I’m not going to bet against Cody Campbell,” and that turned out to be a correct thing to believe (see, I do get some things correct every once in a while).
Cruz posted/tweeted the next day that the commission is still ongoing and that the report of it being shuttered was nonsense. Campbell welcomed the news (which maybe means the report was true and that the continuation of the commission was news to him) and wrote:
“This is very good news. We all need to work together and set aside selfish agendas, tribalism, and politics to preserve the life-changing opportunity that College Sports provide to more than 500,000 young people in this country.”
That’s an absolute direct shot at the Big Ten and SEC.
