Texas Tech Football Notebook: Leftovers from Big 12 Media Day

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on how head coach Joey McGuire saying that he expects top players to reject multi-year contracts:

“There’s some guys,” McGuire said on Tuesday, July 8, “that are like, ‘OK, we’re not going to. We’re going to play under the contract we’re under, and if we have a great year, you’re either going to pay us a lot more or we’re going to go to the portal.’ I think that’s good, I guess, from the standpoint of, at least they’re honest, too. If they are playing for a contract, then I expect to get their best.”

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Mike Craven on the expectations facing Texas Tech.

Pro Football Focus’ William Moy with a more analytical look at Texas Tech’s transfers. Quality read if this is your thing.

ESPN’s Bill Connelly previews the Big 12. I encourage reading the whole thing, it’s good. Here’s just a bit about Texas Tech:

Per SP+, Tech has had one top-50 defense in the past 15 years. I would expect that to change in 2025. But are we talking 49th or, say, 29th? Is Morton good enough at QB? Will good close-games fortune continue even if Tech improves? McGuire didn’t sign an enormous transfer class by today’s standards. Can a more targeted approach pay program-wide dividends the same way massive overhauls at Arizona State and Colorado did? Whatever the answers, Tech is one of 2025’s most fascinating teams.

The Athletic’s David Ubben, Justin Williams & Chris Vannini on anonymous Big 12 coaches and their thoughts on Texas Tech’s transfer class:

“I mean, it’s childish. I think it’s, ‘Hey, look at me,’” said another coach. “I don’t think it’s good for college football.”

Six coaches said they wished they had similar financial support and would do the same if they were in McGuire’s (very expensive) shoes.

“It’s awesome if you got it,” said one coach. “I wish I had it, oh, my gosh.”

“Good for them,” said another. “I’m jealous.”

Others scoffed at the extent of the spending and how it might impact the locker room.

“Ridiculous. …They’re not just outbidding, they’re outbidding (other teams) by 3X,” said one coach. “Wild, but it will be interesting. If the players are good kids, about the right things and about winning, I think it’ll go great. If they’re about themselves, the first time adversity hits will define them.”
