Texas Tech Football Notebook: Preseason Camp Pressers

Preseason or fall camp is here. I think I prefer preseason camp because it is not fall, but I won’t fight you if you want to call it fall camp. I only had time to do the non-transcript for head coach Joey McGuire. I think I may have finally figured out (after non-transcripting the McGuire presser) how to use AI to summarize videos.

Jacob Rodriguez asked if he had read a book, Mindset of a Champion, how people become successful and being mentally tough and handling pressure and the expectations of the roster. How do we handle the pressure and embrace the pressure. You don’t reach greatness without going through the fire. Control what you can control.

Horne will play when he’s ready, while Chapman has not redshirted and want to maintain that.

Injuries:

S Chapman Lewis: ACL, return 10/15
LB Justin Horne: ACL, return 10/15
OL Ellis Davis: back, return 9/29
OL Cash Cleveland: foot, return 9/8-15
CB Macho Stevenson: shoulder, return 9/1-8
DB Braylan McDonald: hamstring, return 9/1-8
DE Terrell Tilmon: foot, return 8/8-14
WR Tyson Turner: collarbone injury (x-ray this week to clear him to play)

Put guys in pressure situations in practice. Try to create chaos and call a sack in a non-sack situation and how the coahces and players respond and get to the next play, same for the defense, maybe throw a flag for pass interference, but cause adversity and see how they respond.

Need to get physical in scrimmages. I think by the nature of the days we practice and have off, will be able to take care of bodies.

Are lucky to have great relationships with NFL scouts and the praise they had on Behren Morton’s arm talent and what he can do was part of it and he embodies how tough he is and how he loves this place. Felt good with the doctors and his shoulder. At the worst, his shoulder will be where it was last year.

Cheto Ofila, that boundary end behind Romello Height and Terrell Tilmon, has followed David Bailey around and they are together.

John Curry had a great spring and he’s 230-something, but still lean.

Roy Alexander has been in this offense, he’s a 1,000 receiver, have seen him in 7-on-7 and am axious to see him.

Have as many for East/West Shrine game and many guys rated as NFL prospects. Are an old team. Have 13 and 15 outside linebacker, defensive end, tackles, that have played. Have 8 or 9 offensive linemen who have played. Bryce Ramirez (married over the weekend), Cole Wisniewski, Jacob Rodriguez, and Will Jados are all married and are grown men and they have high expectations and set themselves up for the future.

Want these guys to understand the process and results. Position-wise I feel great, lots of competition and excellent coaching staff. Told Kirby that I am so impressed with the coordinators and Shiel is so A to B to C. Mack’s demeanor isi the same all of the time, he gets excited when players make plays, but otherwise his heartbeat never changes.

Zane Perry has been here a long time and did a photo shoot and he was passing out uniforms and he said that the sizes are a little bit different. Will see a special team. Excited for the guys to play in front of a sold out crowd.

Shiel Wood will see a lot of different things, 3-down and 4-down. The edge pressure between Bailey and Height. Bailey should get the hype, but took Height to media day for a reason, which is no one is talking about him and I’ve watched 15 practices of one of the best guys I’ve seen. Shiel is going to get after people up front. We really upgraded the secondary with the guys brought in and the growth of BJ Jordan, Marion Horn, and guys who are older.

Trying to get the running backs to nickname themselves the Committee. I feel great about all 3 of those guys. Important to do things with all 3 of them. Help on special teams, great with J’Koby as kick return and maybe punt returner. Cameron Dickey offer-tunner on kickoff. Will be in 2-back, J’Koby can play slot. Somebody is going to have to start, but I’m okay with whoever is in there.

Adam Hill is 240 pounds and he’s had a really good summer. Need to get a lot out of that room. Need to be good in the run game. One of our strenghs in the offensive line.

Anxious to see Roy Alexander return punts, he did return punts early in his career. As far as kickoff, Stone will handle kickoffs, Upton the field goal kicker. He’s done it at a high level, he had a good year at Buffalo. He’s another guy that has put some weight on.

Reggie Virgil is ready to go. He’s such a character. Reggie feels good, he will be ready to go, will start in a yellow jersey, but won’t miss anything. He is cleared. Brings a dynamic, can really stretch the field with him and Caleb Douglas. Leftwich sees scoring from afar.

Johncarlos Miller is pretty physical ,and have one of the best tight end coaches especially blocking and Terrence Carter hasn’t been asked to do as much as we are asking him to do. On the ball tight end Miller, and Jason Llewellyn. Off the ball is TC and Trey Jackson.

So much on tape with the receivers, no one was surprised with what they can do.

Excited for the defensive line. Have lee Hunter and behind him is Jayden Cofield who started multiple games. Dooda Banks is Boundary defensive tackle and nose. Skyler Gill-Howard and AJ Holmes, and Amir Washington. David Bailey, Charles Esters and Braylon Rigsby. Romello Height and Terrell Tilmon and Cheta Ofili. Dylan Spencer is fully back. Probably missed somebody. The depth is pretty special. they feed off of each other. Gill-Howard is helping Holmes, Gill-Howard grabs AJ and they run after practice.

Our plan is to cut it down on where the offensive linemen play. The competition on who starts. Will play some of those guys early to see who is going to step up. Vinny is fully cleared. Hunter is coming back. We have not seen those guys fully healthy.
