Highlights!
CBS Sports’ John Talty profiles front office executives, including Texas Tech’s James Blanchard:
Blanchard’s work made Texas Tech the talk of the offseason. He shepherded an aggressive portal approach that culminated in the nation’s No. 2 transfer class, according to 247Sports. Blanchard has the full trust of Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire and the freedom to extend scholarship offers to the players he likes best. Texas Tech’s aggressive spending has elicited criticism — and probably some jealousy — but it has also made the Red Raiders as relevant as they’ve been in years. Blanchard’s name came up with everyone we talked to for this list.
ESPN’s Craig Haubert on Texas Tech entering the top 25 recruiting class:
The Red Raiders have been active in the transfer portal, but Joey McGuire & Co. also remain committed to building their roster through high schools. He pulled off a huge in-state win landing five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo. It’s the second time McGuire has landed an in-state five-star prospect (Micah Hudson, 2024). Ojo is lean and needs some further development but has elite length, bends well and brings a high ceiling for development. In-state guard Jerald Mays is another nice addition to that unit, as he is a thickly built lineman with good feet.
While the hope is Hudson will still break out and meet expectations, Tech is adding to the receiver room in four-star Chase Campbell, a target with good speed and body control who has amassed over 160 receptions with 35 TDs between his sophomore and junior years. In-state safety Donovan Webb can close well and has strong ball skills to finish and generate turnovers. He was position MVP at this spring’s UA Dallas camp.
CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah on the Big 12 strength of schedule with Texas Tech having the 14th toughest in the Big 12:
While the transfer class is the headliner, the schedule is also a big reason why expectations are off the charts in Lubbock. The nonconference slate is one of the easiest in the country with UAPB, Kent State and Oregon State at home. Five conference games come against teams below .500 last season, including two against new coaching staffs. The road schedule is a little brutal with Utah, Arizona State and Kansas State, but just nabbing one could be enough to reach Arlington.

Red Raider Sports’ J Lopez on what to expect from a healthy receiver Reggie Virgil.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams talks with receiver Coy Eakin about the new revenue sharing world.
