A couple of things:
1. I will need to practice spelling Wisniewski.
2. A day like yesterday I go into it thinking that it’s going to be a normal day and then there’s handful of big news stories and the news cycle just doesn’t quit.
On the Gridiron
Non-transcript of head coach Joey McGuire:
- Great practice and good plays. Guys excited and lot of energy in the building.
- Added a 5th full time trainer because of the guys who have bought into the recovery room.
- Last year at this time we were in a make-shift team meeting room and now we are walking into a state-of-the-art, plus everything is so close.
- Very close, but very competitive. Skyler Gill-Howard spoke about how we have to take care of each other and make each other better.
- Year 1 was an old team, lots of old guys in 1st year, but have a much older team. That’s a big part about of knowing how to practice.
- Gill-Howard is a unique individual and we have a captains committee, it wouldn’t surprise me if he had a C on his jersey. He backs it up, he was in here at 5:30 getting stretched out and ready for practice. We have a lot of older guys have taken some of the younger guys underneath their wing and Skyler takes that serious.
- Micah Hudson is good to go, just working everything in, we want to play him inside and outside.
- Bryce Ramirez, going to make a point about him in the team meeting, he breaks his leg and bone is poking through his skin and he said that he wanted everyone to know that he’s okay and to focus on the game. Don’t say stupid stuff. How you handle every situation, he’s an incredible man. Sheil Wood did not get to see him in the spring and in action. Bryce feels really good. Took care of his leg and shoulder in the spring and that’s made a big difference. He will help us be be versatile.
- Behren Morton is looking good, he’s running around and brings great energy, as does Will Hammond and Mitch Griffith. He looks good.
- John Curry is another guy that brings a lot of versatility, if playing a heavy 2-tight end team, he can play inside linebacker and also play star. He can set the edge to stop the run. He’s so smart, he bleeds red and black, Leyton Stone is like that too. He is extremely talented and has a high football IQ.

Cody Campbell is named to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition. Congrats!
Lawrence Schovanec is named to the College Football Playoff Board of Managers, replacing West Virginia President E. Gordon Gee as the representative from the Big 12 Conference. Congrats!
ESPN’s Chris Low writes about college football schedules and they make the point that Texas Tech will play 7-straight Big 12 games without a bye and includes games against @ Arizona State, @ Kansas State, and @ BYU.
Texas Tech, ranked No. 15 in the preseason, is pushing all its chips in on this season and reportedly spent more than $28 million on its roster. Led by coach Joey McGuire, the Red Raiders are looking to reach double-digit wins for the first time since the late Mike Leach led Tech to 11 wins in 2008. But to do it, they’re going to have to push through a seven-week gauntlet of Big 12 games. That’s right, seven straight Big 12 games without a bye from Oct. 4 to Nov. 15 — at Houston, vs. Kansas, at Arizona State, vs. Oklahoma State, at Kansas State, vs. BYU and vs. UCF.
CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah writes about whether or not high school ties in Texas are still vital to the success of college football programs.
On the Hardwood
Ben Henshall agreed to a 2-year deal with the Perth Wildcats, which means the dream of Henshall with Texas Tech are gone. Supposedly Henshall’s grades were not in order and that was the hang-up with him attending Texas Tech, and then of course, the other part is that he may have just wanted to play back home for a couple of more years.
The hometown kid is back! ❤️
The Perth Wildcats are excited to announce that West Australian guard Ben Henshall has signed a new two-year deal 🤝

Merrmian arrives in Lubbock after a decorated 20-plus year career that includes various roles with six different MLB organizations as well as multiple stops as the pitching coach at the University of Michigan and the University of Toledo.
“We would like to welcome Steve and Sue to the Lubbock community and Texas Tech Baseball,” Tadlock said. “As our staff has come together this summer, it was very evident that we needed to look at having someone in the pitching development role, and we are very fortunate to be able to bring one of the best minds in baseball to our program.”
Merriman arrives at Tech after spending the past three seasons in the Tampa Bay Rays organization as the pitching coach at High-A Bowling Green and Double-A Montgomery.
