This was a very long non-transcript that took a lot of time. Two additional news items below as well. Also, soccer won 4-0 at San Diego State, 4 goals from 4 different women.
Head Coach Joey McGuire
- Kickers went 3-3 for field goals at the end of practice to knock off some gassers.
- Scrimmage on Saturday night at 8:00, certain number of plays for 1’s, 2’s, and 3’s. Will run more like a game. Have 2 different 2-minute situations and overtime work with 1’s vs. 1’s and 2’s vs. 2’s. Mock game week next week.
- The running backs will get equal snaps. Quinten Joyner started last week, Cameron Dickey will start with the 1’s this week. Adam Hill gets most work with the 3’s.
- The walk-through room is scheduled out, the O-line and running backs use it for blitz pick-up, Coach Rob Greene uses it more than everyone. Guys that get dinged up and go through the plays in practice and go through what they are seeing. We always come over here and do our walk-through. The O-line, RB’s & QB’s will go through a walk-through for blitz pick-up.
- Last week we were at 102 plays with the 3 groups and somewhere between 90 and 110 plays, having success on offense gets more plays. Defense did a great job in 2-minute situation.
- Still some battles going into the final week, but getting closer. Such as running back, it would say “or” on all 3 of them. They all have different packages and playing to their strengths. Getting closer to putting a depth chart together.
- Last week really aggressive on 4th down during the scrimmage, doing it now to get good communication and because we have 2 new coordinators. Be closer to last year from the standpoint of field position. Doing it now so we don’t have any hesitation and wanting to be expert in situations and wanting to have good communication now in scrimmages.
- I let the OC & DC talk a lot more, I’m managing the scrimmage on the headset. Still getting it dialed in.
- Hunter Zambrano is all the way back, he’s been full all week. Looked really good. Vinny Scuiry is back Tuesday afternoon.
- Just a short discussion, Kirby Hocutt is going to come in and he’s put out a statement. Big 12 didn’t put out a statement, but the info got out. Our fans will do a phenomenal job, we’ll be in great games and they will understand the need for us not to take a 15-yarder. In other games they weren’t throwing tortillas, Kirby will have a plan and faith our fans will put is in a great situation. It will be interesting throughout the entire conference how it goes.
- Have not identified Upton Bellenfant as the starter, Upton has done it in a game. Stone Harrington has had a great camp. It might be who can win that job in game situations. Hats off on Mack on finding Mitch Griffis and same thing to brag on Kenny Perry for finding Ian Hershey identifying issues with the kickers and he could be a good kicking coach.
- I think somebody is going to win the kicking job.
- J’Koby Williams has been with the 1’s as well.
- On rankings, need to prove it and the majority of college football history, I’m glad we are in as it is easier to climb. I’m excited, but the
- Injury report it’s a great policy, it’s a bit overkill to go 3 days, but we’ll follow suit. Mike Ramirez talks through it with me and Dowdy puts it out.
- The offense has had it rough with a very deep and talented defensive line, Mack Leftwich has put those guys in good situations and moving the pocket. Rob Greene and Jack Teachey will come up with things on 4th down that will take advantage of our physicality up front.
- Skyler Gill-Howard is awesome and could see him being named as a true captain. He backs it up every day and has so much energy and backs it up every day. He has a great voice on this team. He’s going to have a great year.
/Due to time constraints did not non-transcript Kenny Perry/
Defensive Coordinator Shiel Wood
- The DL are big physical guys at the point of attack has not had a team with the depth and talent at interior defensive linemen up front.
- John Curry at the star remains to be seen, he’s a good football player and studies the game. Have the ability to play him at inside and at star. The role he would play would be the same regardless of package. It creates depth.
- I think the offensive line is a big group, similar to our defensive line. The size and depth, they have done a good job of building continuity and play hard every day. They are doing a great job in the run game and pass protection.
- Tarrion Grant has made a lot of strides since he’s been here in January. He’s improved his game. Darcel McBath has done a great job with him. He’s a young player and will continue to improve. He’s been a bit banged up at camp, but he’s done a nice job sticking with it.
- What stood out last week, when they were confident in assignments, played fast and well. Struggled with consistency at times, confidence to know the adjustment. Those miscommunications or lack of focus or issue with assignment led to plays without good leverage at the point of attack. When we scrimmaged, it was 9 practices in and continue to refine, teach and re-teach. When they play hard and fast, we do good things.
- These guys have been a team and done a great job embracing the new players.
- Dontae Balfour, Mo Horn, Amier Boyd, and Brice Pollack, have been pleased with all 4 of those guys and can depend on them. Early in the season, we have to figure things out, maybe several ball games to figure out who will play.
- If we’re putting 6 defensive backs on the field, we’d have 3 cornerbacks and 3 safeties and that’s most likely how that will roll during the season.
- Bryce Ramirez at Mike, Wes Smith at Will, Brock Golwas at Mike.
- A lot of guys on defense, Gill-Howard has done a great job as a leader. Have a lot of veterans and alpha leaders so that’s great for us and the more you have the better you’ll be.
- The green dot is strong safety, Brenden Jordan, Oliver Miles, Peyton Morgan, Coach Greene communicates with them. Wood just makes the call, being the safeties helmet, they have to talk about formation adjustments and the motions.
Offensive Coordinator Mack Leftwich
- The defense has done a good job, you learn a bit more about the scheme and where to attack and have ways to get the ball on the perimeter rather than try to run the A-gap. The great thing about fall camp is that iron sharpens iron and they’ve made us better and hope they would say the same.
- Previous stops have used the same analytics company and have gotten a trial run.
- Not a trick play, has not been my forte. We install and have a base set of trick plays and practice in group, but it is not something spend a lot of time in.
- Have hit a couple of reverses in the past, have not been super successful with the double-pass.
- Healthy receiving corps, been one of the biggest differences, the depth at that position. The guys we are counting on have proven themselves, but even Reggie Virgil, he’s been better than advertised. Kelby Valsin in the slot, TJ West and Leyton Stone, and freshman class has guys that can make plays. Roy Alexander has picked up the offense well. Coach Juice has done a great job developing those guys.
- Never know how the season will shake out for freshmen receivers, but have good depth and would like to redshirt those guys if possible.
- One of the best things about this fall camp is the competition, if you don’t bring it every rep, you’ll get exposed. You are going against players that can make you look bad, it elevates your play.
- Roy Alexander has looked good, picked up the offense well, similar at Incarnate Word. An easy transition. He is almost a slot running back hybrid and could get the ball multiple ways. Pleased with what I’ve seen from him.
- My first two years was literally on the dot 50/50 in run/pass, last year we had some leads and ran the ball a bit more. Each game is different. Where we have match-up advantages. Balance on offense is winning a game however it presents itself, whether it is leaning on the run game or passing 60 times.
- Really pleased with Howard Sampson and Jacob Ponton, going against real guys and edge rushers on both sides. They’ve gotten better and had to elevate their play. Will Jados playing left guard and Howard can move bodies. Davion Carter does it all, he’s 5’10” and he’s a technician and strong. Sherry Wilson has had a good fall camp. D’Anthis Upshaw has had a good camp and has a high ceiling and his technique has improved a ton.
Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt
- This portion of Big 12 agenda was on sportsmanship and wanted to clarify what would happen in situations.
- The conversation was any object, not just tortillas. What was discussed was after the 1st object is thrown on the field, it is a warning. After the 2nd incident, the officials could send the teams off the field and could clear a section and could ask the AD or coach to make an announcement. The 3rd incident the penalty would be thrown.
- A section clearance would be for the remainder of the game.
- Wish it would not have come out in the manner it did, the morning after the meeting someone in that room is talking to that national media member, but it is what it is. We have the best fan base in the nation and create an incredible advantage. We’ll coordinate and work with Raider Riot on how to manage this. We’ll have a great environment.
- Zane Perry should make the athletic director suites have tortillas and we have a lot of traditions at Texas Tech, with the Masked Rider and some come about organically, including the tortilla toss. The rules and how they are going to be implemented, we can continue at the opening kickoff, our student body will have some ideas and how to coordinate and message that to our fanbase and plan for that. Once it hits the field, the sanctions will begin.

Two big news items from yesterday. Item 1 is that Texas Tech football released their 100th Anniversary Throwback uniforms (there are large photos at this link to look at every detail of the uniforms), the idea is that they’ve taken parts of different uniforms through the years to come up with a uniform to wear for the Kansas game on October 11, 2025. I absolutely love them and think they are great, although I am of the opinion that the current beveled Double-T is not the best logo and should go to the flat Double-T for any and all things.
Here are the highlights:
- 1925: The “Tech” wordmark originates from the first Texas Tech football uniforms.
- 1926: The first year of the Double-T.
- 1930: Implementing the Double-T within the traction stripes (on the sleeves), which was considered the cutting-edge uniform of this era.
- 1935: The first year the numbers were added to the front of the Texas Tech football uniforms.
- 1965: Stipes (on the pants) inspired from the Masked Rider & Horses Breast Collar from the Mid-1960s.
- 1969: Stars were earned and added as helmet awards.

The other big news item is what Hocutt discussed above, which is that teams will be penalized for fans throwing things on the field, including tortillas. I sorta get it and I know that I’m supposed to be absolutely against this. I thought that Texas Tech had lots of good people making sure the tortillas were all cleaned up and not an issue. Still, I get the idea behind the rule and I also know that I’m not supposed to be completely rational about this, but I think my ability to be outraged is saved for things that are truly personal and deal with my family. If you really want to know, I would like for Oklahoma State’s paddles to be banned as well. Hocutt seemed to indicate that the fans will essentially have two shots to throw tortillas this, at kickoff and maybe at the first touchdown or for the second half? Something will be worked out and it will take some time to work out the kinks, but there will be a situation where there will be a third penalty and Texas Tech will kickoff from the 10 or whatever.
