Texas Tech Football: RB Quinten Joyner Out for Season

Head coach Joey McGuire confirms that running back Quinten Joyner is out with a leg injury. He doesn’t get into the specifics, but it is confirmed online (such a vague term) that Joyner has torn his ACL so you can expect a year before he returns. McGuire mentions that his brother is on the team, his brother is Quintaelyn Joyner, a safety and also mentions that Jayden Cofield is best friends with Quinten, which is one of the reasons he chose Texas Tech.

This makes the running back room pretty small with just J’Koby Williams, Cameron Dickey, and Adam Hill being the entirety of that room. I’d also add that offensive coordinator Mack Leftwich said last week that Roy Alexander has a running back type of body (5’11″/200) and would be in the backfield at times depending on the situation. This is what I non-transcripted last week: “Roy Alexander has looked good, picked up the offense well, similar at Incarnate Word. An easy transition. He is almost a slot running back hybrid and could get the ball multiple ways. Pleased with what I’ve seen from him.” I’m not expecting a position change, but just thinking out loud.

Robert Giovannetti and Joey McGuire on the next episode of What’s Next and I’ve done a short non-transcript since McGuire largely discussed the scrimmage.

  • Worked on situational stuff, such as 2-minute and down by 8 and have to go for 2. Trying to have physical camp and be great in situational football. The offense started faster than the week before, blew coverage with Douglas and Morton hooking up. Trying to put the staff in situations.
  • Mack Leftwich and Shiel Wood will be on the sidelines and will be a good dynamic. Cochran has been in the box and is the run game coordinator, Garrett is in the box and he was there with Nebraska. Still putting that together on defense. Ryan Conry for special teams in the box.
  • Guys playing at a high level: David Bailey; Lee Hunter; Jayden Cofield; Ben Roberts; Oliver Miles with a big interception on Will Hammond (it was 4th down so he had to throw it).
  • On offense: CD; Will Hammond; Leyton Stone with the 1’s; Bryson Jones; Kelby Valsin with some acrobatic catches; TJ West had a big touchdown with the 1’s; J’Koby Williams had a big touchdowns.
  • 4 for 4 on field goals. Burgess punted well.
  • Quinten Joyner on a non-contact deal, hurt his knee and will be without him. Hate it for him because how well he’s done in the summer and has been a pro. He’s done stuff he hasn’t done before such as pass protection. Lucky to have the room we have. Jayden Cofield and him are best friends and knew his brother who is on the team and has played a bunch of positions.
  • On offense, losing a 3-headed monster, but fortunate with depth. Very close on the 2-deep. A few positions on competition, there will be very few “or’s”, will be for the tight ends and some other spots, but pretty solidified on who will start on game 1.
  • Talked to Josh Pate and started talking about the defensive line and knew that the 2’s and 3’s started games and the depth is pretty incredible and that goes through the team.
  • Realized loved the game at 3 or 4, saw every one of Billy Sims senior year in Hooks, Texas. Grew up in the stands and in college, would drive all over Texas finding the best match-ups with dad. The effect my dad had on teams is something I wanted.
  • Told the coaches that the kickoff luncheon will blow them away, Mack and Shiel have never done this. Knights of Columbus is a neat deal.
