We have non-transcripts from the two line coaches. I also added the heights and weights to all of the players (I also always try to check to make sure I have names correct, although I am sure I make errors) as I was curious about how big these guys are as we’ve heard a lot about their sizes.
Offensive line coach Clay McGuire:
- Probably have the 5, never know until Saturday. Have the starting 5 set. Guys are returning to play. Getting our depth back. Concern we are playing at the speed we need to play at and the depth and rotate depending on performance.
- Jacob Ponton (6-8/305), started the bowl game and is very consistent. Sky is the limit. Improved a lot. Will Jados (6-7/305) continues to get better and better, settled on left guard and tackle.
- Do think we have a 2-deep, last year we had 7 or 6, they were young and developing, those young guys are ready to play this year. Give us the opportunity to take reps off the 1’s.
- Howard Sampson (6-8/340), Will Jados, Sherry (Sheridan) Wilson (6-5/300), Davion Carter (6-0/295) and Ponton. Just got Zambrano back full go and he’s defnitely in the mix. Danny Sill has been improving his skill, true freshmen are getting quality reps.
- Want to have the best 5 out there, as Hunter Zambrano (6-5/310) gets the reps we are going to play the best guy. Ponton maybe should have started the last couple of games.
- Been competing against a high level opponent in the defensive line every day.
- Vinny Scuiry (6-4/295) is dealing with some health things, he’s at his own pace and how bad he wants to be back.
- Run game, Kittley protected the o-line, guys right now are really good players and are really dynamic, Leftwich has implemented multiple ways in the offense, the guys are explosive.
- D’Anthis Upshaw (6-5/305) has fought hard. Connor Carty (6-4/290), Pat McMath (6-4/285), Danilo Gubernich (6-5/285), Elias Gillen (6-6/300) has done good things. The young kids that are fighting. By the end of the season they are getting quality reps.
- Upshaw is a walk-on and went to a school and didn’t win games, Brent Nickerson called us about him, he’s a humble kid and a good opportunity. He’s put on weight and done a good job in the weight room. Has great natural athleticism. Took a shot on him and the strength staff has developed him.
Defensive tackle coach Zarnell Fitch:
- See a group that has a lot of depth and plays hard. Has leaders and the young guys feeding into it.
- Keyshawn Williams (6-3/325) seeing flashes from him, Amier Washington (6-2/270) is having a great camp and fighting through things and playing at a high level.
- We are looking at 7 guys, has a lot of bodies. Jayden Cofield (6-2/330) is a young guy, he’s pretty much another 1 behind Lee Hunter (6-4/330).
- Cofield has a better body, he keeps taking steps.
- A.J. Holmes (6-3/300), Skyler Gill-Howard (6-1/290), Hunter, Cofield, Dooda (E’Maurion) Banks (6-5/300), Keyshawn, Amier. Those are the 7 who can play.
- Wood’s defense is the next great coordinator. Getting to learn from another DC in a system that’s been successful. Continue to learn and can make better players.
- Started working on breakdowns on what coaches are assigned to and starting to implement things. But right now we are still in camp.
Mic’d Up with Romello Height. He does give a shout-out to redshirt freshman defensive lineman Keyshawn Williams.
Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer goes into the why college programs are following the NFL model regarding having a general manager with lots of quotes from Texas Tech GM James Blanchard.
Texas Tech will be favored (thus far) in all but three games, at Utah to start Big 12 play, at Arizona State, and at Kansas State. Most likely scenario is 8 wins.
