On the Hardwood
Texas Tech basketball will host Kansas on Big Monday, February 2, 2026.
CBS Sports’ Isaac Trotter on the best defenders in college basketball and Luke Bamgboye makes the list as an elite rim protector:
5. Luke Bamgboye, Texas Tech: Bamgboye was a massive piece of a VCU defense that ranked No. 4 nationally in two-point defense. The 6-10, string-bean center has a terrific second jump and an outstanding feel for swatting shots away. He needs to add weight and continue to develop, but he’s going to change the complexion of Texas Tech’s defense when he’s on the floor. Opponents shot just a mind-boggling 43.5% at the rim against VCU when Bamgboye was in the game. He’s only getting better by the day.

Another addition of What’s Next with Robert Giovannetti and head coach Joey McGuire:
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on when Texas Tech will name a starting kicker:
“I’m gonna do the same thing we’ve always done,” Perry said Tuesday, “and whoever wins it is gonna have that edge. It could change a couple of times, but it’s what we’ve done. I’m excited for both those guys just making kicks.”
Split equally between the two, Harrington is a perfect 8-for-8 on extra points, and Bellenfant is 6-for-7, the miss coming in Week 1. Both are 2-for-2 on their field goal attempts. Both of Bellenfant’s field goals have been in the 20-yard range, with Harrington hitting a long of 47 plus one in the 30s.
Red Raider Sports’ Avan Hounshell on the media session with special teams coach Kenny Perry:
“They were calling a lot tighter. So if they’re calling it tighter, we’ve got to do a better job… I think we’ve given up probably about 90 yards because of penalties. So just got to get better at that,” Perry said. “In practice, just moving their feet, not grabbing… we’re getting like where we don’t let the guy go, which is an aggressive deal. So just gotta move their feet, stay involved. I’m not gonna change being aggressive. I mean, I’m gonna keep doing that. You get two choices: you’re either soft and you’re not good on punt return, or you’re aggressive and you’re good. So we’ll get it.”
