Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: Texas Tech football safety Brenden Jordan adapts to new roles while missing teammate
Jordan played “Star” — Tech’s hybrid safety/outside linebacker position — last season, but he was a natural choice to switch spots in Lewis’ long-term absence. Star lines up to the wide side of the field, usually close to the line of scrimmage. The safety spot Lewis played — and what Jordan is patrolling this year — is a deep safety that’s also deployed to the wide side.
“For me, it’s a lot more responsibility,” Jordan said, “because you have to get guys lined up and you’re more focused on the bigger picture, rather than just your little triangle in a way. I feel like playing with speed, covering a lot more ground, I really like that.”
Red Raider Sports’ Braeden Frank: Cameron Dickey: strong mindset, stronger brotherhood
For running backs, proving they can protect the quarterback is often just as important as breaking a big run. Dickey and Williams know that, which is why the intensity in those drills often feels like a game within the game.
“Yeah I’ll say we’re close, We are pretty much like brothers you know? We are always hanging out with each other outside of the locker room and checking up on each other.”
The Oregonian’s Ryan Clarke: Can Oregon State’s improved offense match Texas Tech’s firepower?
And at the center of it all was Murphy, who is beginning to embrace the offense. He had the best grade from Pro Football Focus among Group of Six quarterbacks at 88.6 on Saturday.
Gunderson said before the season that he wants Murphy to be a “bus driver” rather than play hero ball. In his mind the former was on display against Fresno State. Better still, Gunderson sees additional opportunities for Murphy as he evolves in the offense.
“The good thing about a guy like him is he’s internally motivated. He wants it,” Gunderson said. “He’s still finding his groove and what works best for him.”

Harsh reality: Creampuff schedule not assisting
Our preseason Big 12 champion pick, Texas Tech’s humiliated Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Kent State over its first two contests and host winless Oregon State this weekend. Sure, the offensive numbers are going to look great for quarterback Behren Morton and this unit, but it’s not going to prepare the Red Raiders well for what they will see at Utah later this month. The conference opener is the first true test that determines whether Joey McGuire’s team is worthy of such lofty projections.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese: Texas Tech football hosts Oregon State: Scouting report, prediction for Week 3 matchup
Texas Tech 45, Oregon State 13: Texas Tech won’t be able to dance into the locker room with the game decided, but it’ll be pretty much over at the break. Oregon State hasn’t proven capable of generating enough on either side to make this a questionable outcome.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: Texas Tech football’s Skyler Gill-Howard persevered through a humble start, family tragedy
“When I chose to leave at 9 years old to go live with my dad, they didn’t have that luxury,” he said, “so I’m like, ‘I took the easy way out. I’m in high school with a bunch of great friends, playing football, doing whatever I want to do, and they can’t do that.’ I’m like, ‘They should be able to do this, not me.’
“My brother just kind of grew up around that stuff, the gangster stuff, all that horrible stuff — which, I was trying to get him out. So he’s growing up like that, and I’m growing up playing football in the suburbs. Now here (at Texas Tech).”
