On the Court
Texas Tech volleyball went 2-1 over the weekend with a 3-2 win on Saturday against UC San Diego. This group is 6-3 on the year and will host the Red Raider Classic this Friday through Saturday, including Albany, Ole Miss, and Incarnate Word.
On the Pitch
Texas Tech soccer defeated Utah State yesterday, 2-1, behind a nice header from Taylor Zdorjewski (assist from Macy Blackburn) and a penalty kick from Peyton Parsons from a Zdorjewski takedown. Conference play starts Friday night with a match against Baylor in Waco, 7:00 p.m. first touch.
On the Gridiron
College Poll Tracker has the details from this week’s AP Poll where Texas Tech is up to No. 17 and Utah is at No. 16. Should be a great game. You’ll also note that I don’t link to the coaches poll as I don’t really care about that poll. Maybe I should, but I do not.
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams opines and wonders if this is the Texas Tech football team that fans have been waiting for:
As the Texas Tech football team was wrapping up its third straight easy victory, disruptive defensive linemen Romello Height and Lee Hunter got their coach’s ear on the sideline.
“They’ve got their hands on my shoulder,” Joey McGuire said, “going, ‘Coach, we’re really good. Let’s don’t miss this opportunity.’ When you’ve got old guys that are talking that way, then you’ve got a chance to be really good.”
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese nitpicks Texas Tech’s win over Oregon State, including concerns about the running game, Morton needing to perform in the red zone, the secondary needing to play tougher opponents, and the starters not playing a full game. All of these are good nitpicks.
2026 Prosper offensive tackle Bryce Gilmore (6-5/297) commited to Texas Tech on Sunday. Gilmore is a 4-star who was previously committed to Arkansas and decommitted last week. Gilmore has offers from Vanderbilt, Arizona State, TCU, Oregon, Ole Miss, Bayor, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma State, Miami, Florida, Florida State, and maybe 20 more Power 4 programs.
Red Raider Sports’ Matt Clare spoke with Gilmore about his commitment:
“The Texas Tech coaches were the most persistent and I have such a strong relationship with the coaches. I would say Coach (Brian) Nance, Coach (Clay) McGuire and Coach (Joey) McGuire are the coaches that I talk with the most from Tech. We had a meeting before the visit end earlier today and I told them I wanted to commit during the meeting.”
Not surprisingly, Gilmore is a terrific athlete playing offensive tackle. At some point it just seems unfair as Gilmore just overpowered whoever was in front of him. He’s not thick, but has a huge frame so don’t think it will be much of an issue to add weight.
