On the Gridiron
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese asks if David Bailey and the Texas Tech defense can flex their muscles against Utah:
Containing Dampier is key for the Red Raiders, something Bailey understands. While the focus on the rushing game starts with integrity in the gaps and rush lanes, Texas Tech’s defensive players also have to trust their eyes and not be deceived when Dampier starts to scramble.
“I know they do a lot of misdirection,” Bailey said of Utah’s offense, “so just focusing on what the coaches are telling us to focus on. And then I trust that the other 10 is going to do their job.”
CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford picks this weeks games and he and a cohort pick the bigger games this week and they pick Texas Tech by a hair.
ESPN with their power rankings:
17. Texas Tech Red Raiders
Previous ranking: 21
Sophomore running back J’Koby Williams had more receiving yards (116) Saturday than his entire freshman year (100), including a 30-yard TD catch. The Red Raiders still haven’t allowed a point in the first three quarters of any game this season, led 45-0 through that point of this one, and put up 513 yards to Oregon State’s 282. The Red Raiders muddled through their second extended weather delay (90 minutes in the first game, 2½ hours in this one) in three games. Behren Morton lit up the Beavers for 442 yards and four TDs, and the Red Raiders are on fire rolling into Big 12 play, with a huge showdown Saturday at Utah. — Wilson
