Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Donovan Atwell actually shot and made a 2-point shot, a take outside with a drive and finish. He continues to be absolutely lights out from outside, 5 of 10 from deep and scored 17.
The Motion:
- Another game that I didn’t get to watch (had a party to attend) and listening to head coach Grant McCasland, you definitely get the idea that the defensive rotations still need work, that he’s playing lineups that have never played before, and that offensively there is still work to do. I think that’s accurate and I think that Milwaukee just made shots and sometimes that happens. Again, just getting the highlights, the difficult shots that Milwaukee was making was really high, especially in that first half and sometimes there’s not a lot you can do other than grind out out a win. Just think, Texas Tech wins by 17 in a game that was ugly and your best player scored just 7.
- That’s exactly what Texas Tech did. Texas Tech allowed Milwaukee to make 47% of their shots in the 1st half and it was 38% in the second. Those 1st half 3’s? The Panthers went 4 of 11 and in the 2nd half 0-6. The only reason it was close was that they made 11 of 15 free throws and that’s part of what McCasland is talking about in terms of playing defense, but not fouling. I’d also add that the turnovers were 4 to 9 for Milwaukee from the 1st to 2nd half.
- And the grinding out thing out is what happened on offense. Texas Tech was pretty much the same and didn’t necessarily get hot, but made 44% in the 1st half and 41% in the 2nd. The free throws were 3 of 3 in the 1st half and 10 of 11 in the 2nd. Texas Tech also just played better, 6 turnovers in the 1st and 3 in the 2nd.
- We got to see the season debut of Luke Bamgboye and he had 4 blocks and that’s going to make a difference with interior defense.
- Chris Anderson (I read somewhere that this is what he wants to be called) finished with 18, which led the team, but was 5 of 12 and I’m fine with that. He also had 5 boards, 7 assists, 2 steals, and 2 turnovers. Such an all-around great line and this offense doesn’t get going without him. In fact, the 2nd half, he scored 18 and was 4 of 7, including 3 of 5 from 3, 4 assists and 0 turnovers.
- Jaylen Petty also showed up and the hitch in his shot looked better, he was 3 of 7 from deep, scored 11, 2 assists, and no turnovers.
- JT Toppin didn’t have a great offensive game, going just 3 of 10 from the field, but still figured out how to grab 10 rebounds.
- Texas Tech had a huge advantage on points off of turnovers, 18 to 8. Milwaukee outscored Texas Tech in the paint, 28 to 24.
- Advanced Stats: Petty +28.3; Bamgboye +12.4; Anderson +10.7; Atwell +8.6; Bryan +0.2; Watts -0.9; and Toppin -11.9.
- Up next? Texas Tech is in the Bahamas to face Wake Forest on Thursday, November 20th, tip-off is at 7:30 pm and broadcast on CBSSN.
