On the Hardwood

The Lady Raiders routed Utah in Salt Lake City, 77-49, behind a terrific performance from Snudda Collins who scored 28 points. Texas Tech held Uta to 33% from the field and 19% from deep and held a 9-rebound advantage on the boards. The turnovers are still an issue, but a blowout win against a Utah team that was 5-2 in the Big 12 before Saturday is a good win. The Lady Raiders will host Iowa State on Wednesday, January 28th at 6:00 p.m. and the game on ESPN+.

CBS Sports had Texas Tech as one of the winners from Saturday’s win over Houston:

Texas Tech scored 55 points on Houston in the first half. Sometimes, you’re fortunate to get 55 points in an entire game against Houston. Not in 20 minutes! In fact, it was the most points Houston allowed in any half in the last 10 years.

When you make history like that, you simply have to win that game.

No. 12 Texas Tech did just enough, emerging with a 90-86 win over No. 6 Houston in one of the best games of the season. The two Big 12 titans left it all on the floor. JT Toppin continued his special season with a 31-point, 12-rebound, three-assist display. Sharpshooters like Jaylen Petty and Donovan Atwell were locked and loaded to offset a quieter day for the usually brilliant Christian Anderson who was blanketed by Milos Uzan.

Texas Tech (16-4, 6-1 Big 12) is also starting to get healthy. Forward Josiah Moseley made his highly anticipated Texas Tech debut and splashed two 3-pointers and ripped down six boards in just 10 minutes. He’s going to help this thin, but talented, Texas Tech club in a major way.

In some ways, Texas Tech used Houston’s recipe to beat the Cougars. Grant McCasland’s club eviscerated Houston for 21 offensive rebounds. Texas Tech’s 55% offensive-rebound rate is the highest mark against Houston in Sampson’s tenure, which dates back to 2014-15. – Trotter

ESPN’s Craig Haubert ranks the portal classes and has Texas Tech at No. 2, right behind LSU:

Nailing a transfer portal class can alter the trajectory of a program. Just ask Texas Tech, which dominated the portal in 2025, then reached the College Football Playoff. The Red Raiders were once again among the most prolific teams — and spenders — in 2026. They landed Brendan Sorsby, the top-ranked quarterback on the market. A three-year starter, Sorsby’s track record, improvisational skills and dual-threat athleticism give Texas Tech a higher ceiling than it had with Behren Morton.

The Red Raiders have some work to do to simply maintain their momentum. They need to replace 24.5 combined sacks between pass rushers David Bailey and Romello Height, their leading tackler at linebacker (Jacob Rodriguez) and their leading tackler in the secondary in Cole Wisniewski.

To do so, coach Joey McGuire leaned on a familiar blueprint. The headliner is top-10 transfer Mateen Ibirogba (No. 8), a versatile defensive lineman from Wake Forest, and he’s joined by a pair of ultra-productive Group of 5 defensive ends in Trey White (San Diego State) and Adam Trick (Miami-Ohio). Inside linebacker Austin Romaine comes over from Kansas State, where he had one of his best outings of the year against Texas Tech when he had eight tackles and a sack in Week 10.

ESPN ranks the top 100 players of the 2025 season and DE Romello Height at No. 46, CB Brice Pollock at No. 30, DT Lee Hunter at No. 22, LB Jacob Rodriguez at No. 4, and DE David Bailey at No. 3. That’s all defensive players right there. I’m guessing that next year there will be some offensive players on this list.
