On the Hardwood

The Lady Raiders host Iowa State tonight, in what portends to be a really good game as Iowa State is a very good team that’s on a bit of a slide, but are led by the very talented Audi Crooks who averages 26 a game. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. and the game will be on ESPN+. As an aside, Snudda Collins earned Big 12 Starting Five honors for her week.

Via College Poll Tracker, Texas Tech moved up just 1 spot and Houston fell 4 spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll. I don’t think that Houston should have fallen that much and think that Houston maybe should have moved up more, but I’m not that worried about it. I don’t think I’d move Texas Tech ahead of Illinois, Iowa State, Michigan State or Gonzaga, but maybe they should. I don’t know. Also wanted to mention that JT Toppin was named the Big 12 Player of the Week.

ESPN has some predictions as the NFL prepares for the Senior Bowl:

Reid: We’ll be talking about Texas Tech’s Romello Height as one of the biggest risers of the week, and I expect him to generate eye-popping pressure during one-on-ones due to his bend and determination. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound Height combined with David Bailey to form a fearsome Red Raiders pass rush, finishing with 10 sacks this season. Height is a bit lean and will turn 25 before next season, but he could have an immediate, pivotal role as a situational pass rusher in the NFL. I see a late-Day 2, early-Day 3 prospect.

Texas Tech announced that safeties coach Rob Green was promoted to co-defensive coordinator. I suppose this is a bit of a surprise, but my guess is that Greene got offers and decided to stay, which is good for Texas Tech and a secondary that’s going to need all the help it can get next year.

ESPN’s Jordan Reid, Matt Miller & Field Yates took in the Senior Bowl practices and had some Texas Tech folks make a big impact, including Lee Hunter:

I’m always looking for that “wow” first impression at all-star games and Hunter delivered it during team drills Tuesday. Lining up as a 1-technique, Hunter absolutely demolished an interior offensive lineman with his first-step power, rocking back the blocker’s shoulders and easily gaining ground. That backs up what we saw on tape during Texas Tech’s run to the CFP this season. The 6-foot-4, 325-pound Hunter currently ranks No. 29 on my board and boosted his stock even more on Tuesday. — Miller.

If you follow Joey McGuire or the official football account on X/Twitter then you know that Caleb Douglas, Reggie Virgil and Cole Wisniewski all made positive impacts and I’m sure there are others as well.
