On the Diamond

Texas Tech softball will start their season on Thursday (that’s tomorrow!) against McNeese State in Lake Charles, Louisiana and then will play ULM on Friday. After that game, they’ll be in College Station to take on No. 11 Texas A&M and then play Providence before playing Bryant on Sunday. That’s a lot of games!

Texas Tech baseball played in the alumni game over the weekend, beating the alumni 10-4:

Outfielder Logan Hughes homered in his first two at-bats and catcher Matt Quintanar added a pair of doubles to push the 2026 Texas Tech program past Team Alumni, 10-4 Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.

Other standouts for the 2026 team included freshmen Linkin Garcia, Adam Hayes and Jesse Rusinek. A true two-way standout, Rusinek went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and on the mound threw a 1-2-3 sixth inning, while Hayes did not allow a hit in two scoreless innings.

Double-T 97.3’s Jamie Lent recapped the alumni game as well and also broke down the center field position battle.

On the Gridiron

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams reports that Texas Tech has added former Comanche and Stephenville running back Sawyer Wilkerson (6-2/215) as a redshirt freshman. Here is his senior year highlights:

Texas Tech football will have their Red Raider Club Wreck ‘Em Tourin Midland on February 10th and at the Rustic in Dallas on February 17th.

ESPN’s Craig Haubert has Texas Tech as the No. 13 class overall in the 2026 class (another official signing day is today I think):

The Red Raiders have been active in the transfer portal, but Joey McGuire & Co. also remain committed to building their roster through high schools. He pulled off a huge in-state win landing five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo. It’s the second time McGuire has landed an in-state five-star prospect (Micah Hudson, 2024). Ojo is lean and needs some further development but has elite length, bends well and brings a high ceiling for development. In-state guard Jerald Mays is another nice addition to that unit, as he is a thickly built lineman with good feet.

LaDamion Guyton added a second five-star to the class, and the Red Raiders received more good news after his commitment when it was announced he was reclassifying from 2027 to 2026. His sooner-than-expected arrival could be valuable as he possesses the tools to replace the pass-rushing production they will lose when David Bailey moves on.

While the hope is Hudson will still break out and meet expectations, Tech is adding to the receiver room in four-star Chase Campbell, a target with good speed and body control who has amassed over 160 receptions with 35 TDs between his sophomore and junior years. In-state safety Donovan Webb can close well and has strong ball skills to finish and generate turnovers. He was position MVP at this spring’s UA Dallas camp.

ESPN’s Craigh Haubert & Tom Luginbill go through the most ready-to-play players of the 2026 class:

Most NFL upside: LaDamion Guyton, Texas Tech

Drawing comparisons to All-Pro DE Will Anderson, Guyton is more of an edge than a true linebacker, and he excels wreaking havoc up the field. For a high school pass rusher, Guyton has an uncommonly savvy plan of attack with explosive burst and good bend. He’s also walking into an advantageous situation. David Bailey is moving on, so there’s an opportunity to make a quick impact, but the Red Raiders’ transfer portal additions give them enough depth to allow them to take Guyton’s development along methodically if needed. Guyton could easily match — if not surpass — Bailey’s impact at Texas Tech and develop into a projected first-rounder, just like his predecessor.
