Starting 5

1. Stats. I don’t know what I was expecting, but the Arizona State offense is very much buoyed by having a team that gets to the lien quite often, 56th in the nation. Other than that, they sort of struggle, 171st in 2-point percentage, 185th in 3-point percentage, 188th in offensive rebounding, and 122nd in turnover rate. Those don’t scream a top 60 offense, but maybe that’s what getting to the line can do. Defensively, things are not as rosy, although they are a team that will force turnovers, 65th, and block shots, 37th. They are 320th in opponent offensive rebounding, 240th in opponent 3-point shooting, and 253rd in opponent 2-point shooting.

2. Scouting. Odum is the best passer on the team, really the only guy who passes the ball at a decent rate and he has the ball in his hands quite often, along with Johnson. He’s not a terrible shooter, 38% from deep, and he will make his free throws, but he makes 42% of his 2-point shots. Diop is a decent rebounder and spectacular shot-blocker. He’s one of the guys that gets to the line quite a bit, along with Johnson. Speaking of Johnson, he’s also just an okay shooter, 35% from the arc. Trouet and Grbovic are black holes, once they get the ball they are pretty much shooting, Grbovic will shoot from beyond the arc and makes a decent rate, 36%.

3. How They Match Up. The size of Arizona State is ridiculous, reminds me a bit of Colorado. That’s a tough ask for a team that’s not that big and Texas Tech has struggled with size in he past, see Purdue and Illinois. I don’t think the Sun Devils are on that level, but I think this can be a very dangerous team. Against Arizona, Texas Tech fouled way too much and as mentioned above, that’s one of the big things that Arizona State does well to generate offense, getting to the line. If Texas Tech can play defense without doing that and if Texas Tech can hammer the offensive boards and continue the defensive pressure, then I like Texas Tech’s chances.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

On a three-game winning streak after its third win over a top 10 opponent this season and third win over a No. 1-ranked team in program history, No. 13 Texas Tech takes on Arizona State at 10 p.m. (CST) on Tuesday at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe, Arizona before returning to Lubbock to begin a two-game home stand. The Red Raiders (19-6, 9-3 Big 12) are coming off a 78-75 overtime win over then-No. 1 Arizona last Saturday while the Sun Devils (13-12, 4-8 Big 12) earned an 85-76 win over Oklahoma State last Tuesday before taking the weekend off.

JT Toppin, who earned his fourth Big 12 Player of the Week honor of the season and sixth of his career on Monday, recorded his 16th double-double of the season with 31 points and 13 rebounds (7 offensive) in the win over Arizona while Christian Anderson made six 3-pointers and finished the game with 19 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Toppin is the only player in the nation averaging a 20-plus point double-double and became only the second player in NCAA history to record a 30-point double-double in a road win over a No. 1-ranked opponent – joining North Carolina’s Luke Maye who had 30 points, 15 rebounds in a road win at Duke in 2019 – while also being only the second Big 12 player in the conference’s history to do it in any game against a No. 1 with West Virginia’s Devin Williams posting the first in 2016. Toppin comes into the matchup against the Sun Devils leading the nation with 226 made field goals and leads the Big 12 with 16 double-doubles, 11.0 rebounds and 4.3 offensive rebounds per game. He ranks third in the Big 12 and ninth nationally with 21.9 points per game. Anderson leads the Big 12 and is third nationally with 7.7 assists per game while also being sixth in the conference with 19.1 points per game. Donovan Atwell, who now has 301 made 3-pointers in his career, hit three against Arizona and is now second in the Big 12 with 90 made 3s this season, by shooting 44.6% from beyond the arc and by making 3.6 3s per game. He ranks in the top 5 nationally in each category. Anderson’s six 3s at Arizona has him third in the Big 12 with 84 made 3s this season, a 43.5% and with 3.5 makes per game. The Red Raiders are also getting 12.2 points and 6.2 rebounds per game from LeJuan Watts and 9.1 points per game from Jaylen Petty who has made 46 3-pointers in his freshman season. Atwell is currently fourth in program history with his 90 made 3s this season and is approaching the single-season record of 94 by Cory Carr in the 1996-97 season. Anderson’s 185 assists ranks fourth in a season for Tech with Elijiah Hawkins owning the single-season program record with 276 last season in 35 games.
