Starting 5

1. Stats. K-State shouldn’t be this bad. They are a pretty good shooting team, especially beyond the 3-point line, 48th in the nation. The Wildcats are middle of the road inside the arc, 131st and 215th from the line. Where they struggle is turnover rate, 236th, offensive rebounding, 175th, and free throw rate, 359th. They also tend to get their shots blocked at maybe too high of a rate, 255th. Defensively, it’s sort of more of the same. Not great at anything. 139th at turning teams over, 212th at putting the opponent on the line, 317th at opponent offensive rebounding. They are not forcing teams to shoot poorly, 138th beyond the arc and 213th inside of it.

2. Scouting. Haggerty is really good, a terrific scorer and high usage player for K-State. He’s also a good passer and he makes 53% of his 2-point shots and shoots a decent amount of 3’s and makes 36%. Johnson is a very good shooter, 40% from deep and he’s also a good distributor of the ball. McGriff is the low-post threat and he’s fantastic down low, making 76% of his shots. Manning and Buca are the offensive rebounders so Texas Tech will need to watch out for that. Bashir didn’t play against Baylor and is questionable for today. He, Haggerty, Johnson, and Castillo are going to shoot the 3 and that’s what they did against Baylor.

3. How They Match Up. We don’t know what this team will be without Toppin so this is tough to estimate. I think that squeezing more out of the 4 starters and then asking a bit more from Bamgboye and Moseley is going to be key. Maybe their play will be dependent upon the opponent. Bamgboye hasn’t been able to keep himself out of foul trouble for the most part so I don’t know how reliable his minutes are going to be. Akuentok gets himself in bad spots defensively at times. I tend to lean more on Moseley to be more steady. I don’t have any reason to believe that, just a gut feeling, but do think from what little we’ve seen, Moseley can score from inside and out. It will be interesting to see how Anderson will intitiate some actions and how that starts, will it be with Watts and Moseley? That’s sort of my guess.

A special season continues and a two-game homestand begins for No. 13 Texas Tech when it hosts Kansas State at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (19-7, 9-4 Big 12) are coming off a road trip where they knocked off then-No. 1 Arizona with a 78-75 overtime win last Saturday before falling, 72-67, on Tuesday night at Arizona State. K-State (11-15, 2-11 Big 12) snapped a six-game losing streak with a 90-74 home win over Baylor on Tuesday night and come to Lubbock with a 1-7 road record.

“It was a wild last couple games that we’ve had as a program,” Texas Tech coach Grant McCasland said. “It’s great to be back in the USA playing a home game against an outstanding opponent in Kansas State. I think they played their best game of the year the last time out. We’re looking forward to Saturday and the opportunity to compete.”
