I received two additional messages, the first from Justin, who has become a friend and running partner on occasion. Yes, actually meeting in real life. And a second message from a grandfather who has a grandson who is in the 8th grade and also adopted like my boys and is the star running back and plays baseball. I’ve been pretty silent about Fits & Yo because I’ve largely been off of social media, but they are doing great.
On the Diamond
Texas Tech baseball dropped a mid-week game to Dallas Baptist, 16-10. I tend to not put a ton of stock into these mid-week games, especially for programs who are trying to get pitching and everything else figured out. The offense does appear to be humming and that’s what I’ll take from this game and hopefully the pitching can get figured out for the weekend series (maybe need to find a reliable Sunday starter).
Kaitlyn Terry was named the Big 12 Player of the Week for the 2nd time of the season:
Terry was a big catalyst in helping the No. 3 Red Raiders defeat Arizona in a doubleheader last weekend as she launched three homers and recorded six RBI. She hit .571 on the weekend with 13 total bases while having a slugging percentage of 1.857. She also drew three walks to finish with an on-base percentage of .700 in what was a special weekend for the Glendale native at the plate.
On the Hardwood
JT Toppin was named 1st team AP All-American and Christian Anderson named 3rd team AP All-American and Texas Tech was the only program with two players on the AP All-American teams.
On the Gridiron
The next episode of What’s Next with Joey McGuire and hosted by Robert Giovannetti and they answer some of the recent online warriors who criticized Texas Tech for not having dumbbells less than 40 pounds, which was part of a walk-through with some sort of social media guy and Sheridan Wilson. The reason I didn’t even mention it, or really even care, is because it is fake outrage and I refuse to be part of that machine. I think I read that JJ Watt had some opinions and I don’t even care about former athletes having takes. The correct response? Reaching out to the coaches or staff at Texas Tech and finding out a bit more about the situation and reserving an opinion until such person is fully informed. That doesn’t get clicks and a lot of these former athletes are trying to build a brand of sorts on social media. Robert Griffin is another guy that’s just into getting clicks. Don’t waste your energy on those things. There are things that are out there that are not worth my time and this story was the definition of that.
CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford ranked the top 10 basketball and football coach combos and don’t get too worked up over this either, but as an example, Jon Sumrall for Florida hasn’t coached a game for Florida, but he and Todd Golden are at No. 6. Again, whatever. It’s a made up list and just one person’s opinion. I know that I’m supposed to have hot-takes about everything, but at times it’s just silly.
