The Morning Stake

The Morning Stake: February 22nd

It’s your daily update on all things Texas Tech, including wins for the tennis and baseball teams and a strong finish by the men’s golf team.

Softball

Softball Loses to South Dakota. The softball team went 1-4 on their recent trip to San Diego, falling to South Dakota, 5-3. they did play a few ranked teams, and even beat California 2-0, who is 22nd in the nation. The softball team will be back in action on Thursday for a double-header in Lafayette to take on No. 7 Louisiana Lafayette.

Tennis

Tennis Rolls No. 39 William and Mary. The ladies tennis team rolled No. 39 William and Mary on Saturday and improved their record to 10-1 on the year:

“I thought mentally we did an extremely good job,” Texas Tech head coach Todd Petty said. “The conditions weren’t going to allow either team to play great tennis today. There wasn’t much difference between one and six, the tennis was going to be the same on all courts. We’re fortunate enough that we’ve been outside, so this is something we’re used to and we handled it a little better.”

Golf

Texas Tech Finishes 3rd at Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The men’s golf team finished 3rd overall at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate, backed by a strong performance from Hurly Long, who finished 5th overall:

“Obviously it wasn’t the finish we wanted today, but there were a lot of positives to take away,” Texas Tech head coach Greg Sands said. “Hurly Long was fantastic, finishing in the top five. We have a couple weeks now to fine-tune some things before our next tournament. I’m looking forward to getting back at it.”

Lady Raider Basketball

Lady Raiders Fall to Kansas State. The Lady Raiders are having a rough go at it, losing to Kansas State, 65-53 in Manhattan on Sunday:

“We’ve struggled all year to score the basketball and that continued today,” Texas Tech head coach Candi Whitaker said. “Kansas State makes it difficult, changing defenses as much as they do and showing different zones. It’s good experience for our young players to play against multiple defenses throughout the game like that.”

Baseball

Texas Tech Wins the Series, Beats Milwaukee 12-0. The Red Raiders win the series against Milwaukee and the final game of the series 12-0. Make sure and check out the series post where we’ve got recaps from all four games this weekend. Texas Tech has a mid-week game against Sam Houston State on Wednesday and then head to Houston for a three game series at Minute Maid Park, playing Houston, Arkansas and Louisiana-Layfayette.
