Texas Tech softball: Texas Tech renames softball facility to Tracy Sellers Field

Texas Tech will rename its softball facility to Tracy Sellers Field on Friday evening when the No. 2 Red Raiders open a three-game Big 12 series against Iowa State. A formal recognition of the Sellers family will follow later this season.

“The Sellers family has forever transformed the trajectory of our softball program here at Texas Tech,” Hocutt said. “Thanks to their generosity, the Red Raiders are annual contenders for not only Big 12 Conference championships but national titles. We’re proud that our softball student-athletes will now compete on a field named after one of their own in Tracy Sellers thanks to the tremendous support she and her husband John have consistently provided to further elevate this athletics program.”

Tracy Sellers, formerly Tracy Cartier during her time as a Red Raider softball student-athlete from 2001-03, and her husband, John, have been a driving force behind Texas Tech’s rise in softball, contributing to both the Red Raider Club and Matador Club for Name-Image-Likeness (NIL) support as well as to significant capital projects such as the facility now in her name. Prior to this season, Texas Tech overhauled the facility with numerous upgrades, most notably a new awning and protective netting down both baselines thanks in part to philanthropic gifts from the Sellers family.

“This is a tremendous honor for our entire family,” Tracy Sellers said. “I owe so much to my time as a softball student-athlete at Texas Tech. I truly believe it shaped who I am today, so I believe strongly in giving back to a program that gave me so much. I want to help provide the same experience for the tremendous student-athletes in our dugout as Coach Glasco and his staff continue to take this program to new heights.”

Texas Tech softball: NiJaree Canady awarded with AUSL Golden Ticket

NiJaree Canady was given the first Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) Golden Ticket of the year following No. 2 Texas Tech’s 9-1 win over Iowa State on Friday night which saw Canady earn a complete-game victory in the circle.

The Golden Ticket started last season with the beginning of a new pro softball league and symbolizes a player being drafted into the league. Last season, eight different student-athletes were given the prestigious honor with more to be given out this year with such a talented senior class.

Canady was given the ticket by the commissioner of the league, Kim Ng, and also received a special video announcement from Texas Tech alumni and NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes congratulating her on the historic occasion.

“As one of the most talented players in the game today, it is fitting that NiJaree is the first recipient of a Golden Ticket this year,” Ng said in a release from the AUSL. “This is also the beginning of what will be a truly special draft class, with many outstanding players across the country. The Golden Ticket represents an important milestone as we recognize players who have been selected in the draft and will have the opportunity to continue their careers at the professional level in the AUSL once their college careers are complete.”
