Texas Tech Football Notebook: Post-Spring Break Work

Non-transcript from the post-practice press conference with Joey McGuire last week.

  • Finished practice and 3rd down period, 3’s, then 2’s, then 1’s and Stone Harrington hit a 40-yard field goal to make the defense run. Felt good about the back and forth team-wise.
  • Mike Smith and used one of his messages and basically after a victory, tighten your chin-strip, so good to have a guy like that in the league and talk to guys about what it’s like on Sunday, he interviewed Jacob, Cole and Romello and good to get his feedback.
  • J-Rod and Bailey will continue to train and changes from training for the combine to staying in shape and a lot of these guys will go to interviews with the GM and coach.
  • Great to have our pro-day on campus, show what Lubbock is all about and our personnel department is retaining and evaluating players and are playing their best football by far, Bailey and Height are examples of that. Strength side we have guys doing things that weren’t done at the combine. The scouts and coaches know that this will be like this again next year. Ben Roberts and BJ Jordan, coaches have commented about them, and Sorsby, os it is prepping for another 32 teams to come next year.
  • With Bailey and look at production and no one is close to Bailey’s production and where he truly played defensive end. If I am taking a defensive player and not taking Bailey, I’d want to reconsider the processes, I love Bain at Miami and has some position flex, but I’m taking David Bailey.
  • Ramon-Edwards, didn’t go through spring last year or go through camp, he’s fully healthy. Donovan Webb is playing star and doing a good job. Dingle is ahead of schedule because he’s a freak athletically, Marcus is with the 2’s and Donovan with the 3’s.
  • Freshmen DB’s, made a comment to Darcel and Rob Greene and the freshmen are doing some good things. Luke Bell has done a good job in practice, Voss had a pick in the 1st practice [Ed. Note: I didn’t go back and listen to this, but could swear this is what McGuire said and have reviewed the roster and can’t find these guys.]. A couple of those guys are running with the 2’s and our receivers are all good.
  • Rotating a lot of guys, Adam Trick at field, Bryce Butler is 3-tech, A.J. Holmes and then Trey White at boundary. Mateen Ibirogba has impressed inside pass rush the first 2 days. Julien Laventure has come-on. Holmes plays at a different speed because he knows the defense. The other guys need the reps. Trey and Adam are such high motor guys and effort is at high level.
  • Holmes is the leader and one of the leaders of the team and that room. He has to make sure everyone is catching up with him, excited about that room. Keyshawn had a great 1st day back. Him now being 3rd year and he’s so athletic.
  • Cofield would be back in November, so probably end of October or November. He’s already redshirt, could possibly get a medical if he doesn’t play next year.
  • Kenny Johnson is a guy you love being around, he has a million dollar smile, has a good job of knowing the offense. He has good hands. He is a legitimate punt returner and has a skill set, along with Malcolm Simmons. J’Koby is returning punts, but he’ll be the kickoff returner.

CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah with the win predictions for the Big 12 and here’s the bit on Texas Tech:

Wins: Abilene Christian, at Oregon State, Houston, Sam Houston, at Colorado, Arizona State, at Cincinnati, Arizona, West Virginia, at Oklahoma State, at Baylor, TCU

Losses: None

Analysis: It’s extremely foolish to pick a power conference team to go undefeated before the season. The Red Raiders also lost a bevy of playmakers, including multiple potential first-round picks to the NFL Draft. But, there are two factors that stand apart with the Red Raiders. First, their schedule is incredibly easy. They miss both Utah schools and get Houston, Arizona and TCU at home. The most interesting dynamic is that of the offensive line, which is poised to take a massive step forward in protecting top transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby. Expect even more offensive fireworks in 2026. Pick: Over (+106)

ESPN’s Bill Connelly has the debut of the SP+ rankings for 2026 he got Texas Tech at No. 7. and for the rest of hte Big 12:

ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum has the guys he’d target in each round with Jacob Rodriguez in the 3rd round

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on WR Malcolm Simmons possibly running outdoor track this year if things work out.

I haven’t covered Texas Tech’s Pro Day, not because I didn’t care, but because it’s a lot of drills with a lot of numbers. The best moment is probably Skyler Gill-Howard getting back at it after his leg injury. And I’m happy for all of those guys, I hope they all chase their dreams and succeed in whatever they want.

You’ll note that I’ve stopped posting on social media. This includes both me personally and for the blog. I am not a fan of social media, but realize that I still have to be on it to an extent. I have tried to spend less and less time on there and not depend on it. I do have a personal website, Seek The Substantial, and I try to write at least quarterly updates. I don’t know who this is for, maybe one day it will be for my kids. I published the latest 2026 Q1 report yesterday. This is only if you are interested in me personally, my wife, and my kids. If you aren’t interested, that’s absolutely okay. You’re here for the Texas Tech content.
