At the Net
Via USA Today’s Nathan Giese and Josh Peter, on the termination of former Texas Tech volleyball coach Tom Graystone, resulting from throwing a volleyball at a player on August 10th. If you are thinking that this is an article that will paint Graystone in a bad light, I’d just tell you to read the whole thing because it talks to parents as well as Graystone who participates in the article.
On the Pitch
Texas Tech soccer defeated Oklahoma State 3-0 on Thursday with 3 first half goals from Raleigh Greason, Eleanor Hays and Taylor Zdrojewski. They will continue their road trip to Ft. Worth to take on TCU on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and the game will be on ESPN2.
On the Hardwood
Red Raider Sports’ Lane Selph has the updated court date for Darrion Williams in McLennan County. Williams’ trial is by jury, which the way I’ve always understood these types of civil situations, either party can request a jury trial.
ESPN’s Dick Vitale has his preseason watch lists and he’s got JT Toppin in a separate category “Not Forgotten”:
Toppin remains one of the nation’s most respected stars and is among the few returning All-Americans. With no timeline on his return from a torn ACL in February, I couldn’t put him on the preseason team. Should he play this season, though, his impact should be felt immediately.
On the Gridiron
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams on how Howard Sampson has made himself into an NFL prospect:
Sampson graduated in May but decided in the months before to stick around for his last year of college eligibility. The consensus feedback he received from NFL scouts projected him as a late-round draft pick had he come out early. He needed to clean up the penalties, including pre-snap stuff like false starts, and wanted to work on his hand placement and bend.
ESPN is rankng the top freshmen and LaDamion Guyton sits at No. 21:
Still only 17, Guyton has posted a modest nine pressures, but his age makes that total more promising. Guyton reclassified from the 2027 recruiting class last October and ended the cycle as the No. 6 recruit in the country thanks to his high-end pass-rushing traits off the edge. So far, Guyton has played a complementary role in the Red Raiders’ revamped defense, which had to replace David Bailey, but he has shown flashes of his ability to change a game, recording his first two career sacks in a 49-14 win over Sam Houston.
