The Morning Stake: Baseball Beats TCU; Spring Sport Update; Talking QB’s

Baseball Wins, Smith Pitches a Complete Game. What a terrific game, and the open thread for the series has been updated with a recap and a box score of the game. Cameron Smith pitched a complete game, allowing just 1 run and the Texas Tech bats came alive enough to push 5 runs across the plate. Really terrific win.

Spring Sports Update. Here we go.

QB Review. DMN’s Tommy Magelssen has his position review of the quarterbacks (I’m actually working on my thoughts after I finish this post):

2015 outlook: Mahomes and Webb are locked in one of the many quarterback battles across the region this spring, but it is likely to go into preseason workouts. Webb is still recovering from shoulder surgery to his non-throwing arm, but has been able to particpate in most spring workouts. Mahomes is splitting time between football and baseball, but he showed sparks last weekend in the Red Raiders’ spring scrimmage that appear to make him the front runner in the competition — but Webb showed last year, often putting the blame of losses upon his own shoulders, his dedication to the team and is one of the hardest workers on the squad. He won’t let Mahomes take his job without a fight. Even if Mahomes wins the job, Webb will push the sophomore in practice every day.

Miscellaneous. Land Grant Gauntlet with the note that TCU QB Trevone Boykin underwent wrist surgery this week . . . ESPN’s Jake Trotter did a Big 12 mailbag if you want to read that . . .
