Starting 5

1. Stats. Milwaukee is okay offensively, but apparently terrible defensively. On the offensive end, Milwaukee is a low turnover team and they do a decent job of making 3’s, 93rd in the nation, but they are not good at making free throws, 318th, and that’s holding them back quite a bit. Defensively, they are allowing teams to make a ton of 3’s (may be a factor of who they have played), 321st in the nation in defending beyond the arc, and are also putting teams on the line too much, 269th in opponent free throw rate.

2. Scouting. Jovanovich is the best player, but isn’t a stretch forward. He’s really good inside the arc, inside and mid-range. He’s a low-turnover guy and doesn’t have the ball in his hands that much. Hubbard and Augillard are Milwaukee’s best shooters, especially Hubbard, who is making 55% of his shots and 42% of his 3’s so that will be a point of emphasis. Augillard is making 42% of his 3’s as well and he’s the highest use player other than Dixon.

3. How They Match Up. I think there will be an emphasis on the defensive end of things and we still need to see some guys get healthy, which I think will happen. Texas Tech is a really good offensive team and they should just out-offense the Panthers. With that being said, I’d love to see Milwaukee use the same sets and motions offensively and see how Texas Tech guards those sets. I would love to see Bamgboye back to help defend the rim, that would help a ton defensively.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese: JT Toppin’s domination and what we learned from Texas Tech basketball’s loss to Illinois

The Red Raiders were the undersized team in the matchup (Illinois is quite lengthy) but had 52 points in the paint to Illinois’ 42.

Despite this, the Illini got to the free throw line 23 times while Texas Tech had just four attempts at the stripe. Tyeree Bryan spent much of the game in foul trouble and was given his fifth infraction in just 26 minutes of play.

Outside of Toppin, LeJuan Watts was the only other Texas Tech player to hit double digits in the scoring column. He had 21 points to go with four rebounds. Christian Anderson was just 4-of-12 from the field and 0-of-6 from 3-point range but had 11 assists to continue his hot start sharing the ball.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

Back at home and riding a 40-game non-conference home winning streak, No. 11 Texas Tech is set to take on Milwaukee at 7 p.m. on Friday at United Supermarkets Arena before a trip to the Bahamas next week. The Red Raiders (2-1) dropped their first game of the season with an 81-77 road loss at No. 14 Illinois on Tuesday night despite JT Toppin going off for 35 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three blocks and three steals – becoming the first player in Big 12 history to accumulate those numbers in a game. Through three games, Tech is averaging 91.0 points, 18.7 assists and 11.7 3-pointers per game this season and currently leads the Big 12 with 16.3 offensive rebounds per game. The program has not lost a non-conference home game since falling to Kentucky in overtime on January 25, 2020 which snapped a 54-game streak and is currently 18-0 under head coach Grant McCasland in those games.

“We played in a great road environment at Illinois and learned a lot in that game,” McCasland said. “I loved our competitiveness of our team in the second half. I love our team and being around them. I love the way we’ve responded and our best days are definitely ahead of us. We know we’re facing a great Milwaukee team. When you schedule teams you do that to get teams that will make you better for conference. Their team is unbelievably hard playing and we’ll have our hands full but are looking forward to be able to compete.”
