On the Hardwood

Lady Raider basketball defeated Arkansas 80-68 yesterday afternoon. Bailey Maupin led the team with 19 points, and she along with 4 others scored in double-figures. The Lady Raiders had 40 points in the paint, to just 30 for Arkansas and held the Razorbacks to just 39% from the field. They will host Mississippi State on Thursday, November 20th at 6:00 p.m.

Head Coach Krista Gerlich
On the 1993 getting inducted into the Ring of Honor…
“I think when they got to talking about Lady Raider Basketball and who could they induct, it just made sense for them to think about the team… We’re the ones who showed Texas Tech can be nationally known. That team ignited Lady Raider Nation, in my opinion, and really made women’s basketball across the state and region, just explode. So many great memories, so many great fans and Coach [Marsha] Sharp is the leader of all of that. For the team to be recognized was the greatest thing that I could have seen happen because our teammates deserve that. I just preach to my team every single day about that team and how unselfish we were and how much we all understood our roles. And if we can create that type of chemistry and trust amongst one another, we will have elite success. I just think it was so appropriate that our team was inducted because we were the first national champions at Texas Tech.”

On the Gridiron

Via College Poll Tracker, Texas Tech moved up 1 spot to No. 7 in the AP Top 25. Texas Tech is as high as No. 4 and as low as No. 10 (thanks a lot Harry Greenstein, who just happens to cover the Kansas Jayhawks, and I am sure this is a coincidence).

ESPN’s Heather Dinich on this week’s projection of the College Football Playoff with Texas Tech at No. 5:

Why they could be here: The Red Raiders are “highly regarded by the committee,” Rhoades said last week, earning the room’s respect with their complete performances in wins against two top-13 teams — BYU and Utah. Rhoades said that defensively, the Red Raiders are “really, really good. Offensively, moves the ball up and down the field.” The only concern he mentioned was leaving some points on the board by finishing drives with field goals instead of touchdowns, but that wasn’t the case Saturday against UCF. Texas Tech had a 41-2 lead at the half.

Why they could be lower: It would be surprising to see the Red Raiders fall behind Ole Miss after the Rebels struggled for the bulk of four quarters against Florida. The committee made it clear last week that it thought Texas Tech was the better team, and nothing Ole Miss did against a now 3-7 Florida team is likely to change that.

ESPN’s writers have Texas Tech anywhere between No. 4 and No. 5 in their playoff seeding.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli writes that Texas will cause problems soon, but Texas Tech vs. BYU seems likely.

CBS Sports’ David Cobb with grades for the top 25 this week:

No. 6 Texas Tech
Grade: A
Result: 48-9 win vs. UCF
Title odds: +1400
Texas Tech quickly put to rest any idea that there might be an emotional letdown from a big win over BYU, as the Red Raiders brutalized UCF from the jump. Quarterback Behren Morton rested the entire second half after Texas Tech jumped out to a 38-2 halftime lead. Penalties were the only problem for the Red Raiders. This was another reminder that Texas Tech stands head and shoulders above the rest of the Big 12.

Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese on how there was no letdown on Saturday:

Expecting a letdown seems silly, to be honest. This Texas Tech team isn’t built like that. If the prevailing thought is the roster is made up of hired guns, then it shouldn’t be a surprise that the henchmen focus on the job at hand. They never set out to just beat BYU or UCF or any other school that’s on their schedule. The three-letter acronym they have their sights set on is the CFP, and there’s still work to be done to secure a spot in that one.
