1. Stats. Hey, it’s just the No. 1 team in the nation. Purdue is a juggernaut offensively, they are 31st in 3-point shooting and that’s part of what makes them so great. They are a relative low-turnover team, 38th in the nation, and they absolutely crash the offensive boards, 15th in the nation. Of all things, Purdue doesn’t get to the line a ton, 320th in free throw rate. Defensively, they are very good, their biggest issue is that they don’t turn teams over, 329th in turnover percentage, but they play defense without putting teams on the line, 11th in the nation. They are top third in opponent 3-point percentage, 117th in the nation, and 91st in the nation in 2-point shooting.

2. Scouting. Kaufman-Renn is one of a handful of good offensive players, he’s terrific inside and that’s where he gets most of his points, but he’s also a great rebounder. Cluff is obviously a great shot-blocker and rebounder and he’s doing quite well shooting inside. Smith isn’t shooting as well as he has previously, only making 35% of his 2-point shots and 3-point shots. Loyer is definitely picking up the pace, he’s making 49% of his 3-point shots and Cox isn’t far behind, 41%.

3. How They Match Up. Texas Tech is a prolific 3-point shooting team and Purdue isn’t used to defending teams that shoot as much as Texas Tech. I think that Texas Tech will be in the lab this morning to create some different actions to get better looks. The offense stalls too much with the high pick and roll and I also think that Purdue has plenty of size to double Toppin, just like Wake Forest. This would be a great game to figure out if Bamgboye and Toppin can figure out how to play better.

The Athletic’s Sam Khan Jr.: How Texas Tech GM James Blanchard went from message boards to building a big-budget roster

What do you look for in the portal that applies what you learned from the NFL?
The big thing is production over potential and body types. Movement skills, body types and do they fit into your scheme? There’s a lot of good players out there, but some of these guys don’t fit into people’s schemes. At some point, you’re just collecting players and it’s like, you have no idea how this guy’s going to fit into your building.

What prompted the shift to heavily utilizing the transfer portal?
Just doing research and seeing how effective it is. In 2023, Florida State and (GM Darrick Yray) were one of the first ones to crack the code in the portal. That portal class they put together (was impressive). … Then in 2024, Colorado did it at a high level. Deion (Sanders) went and got some real ballplayers to put around Shedeur and they went from four wins to nine wins. Ohio State, one of the meccas, they went out and signed 10-12 NFL-caliber guys (in the portal) and had a great College Football Playoff run.

After looking at that, I said, “OK, if we do this in the portal the right way, we can dominate the Big 12.” Because I feel like a lot of people were still iffy about (using the portal that way). And with the help of (director of player personnel) Brian Nance, (scouting director) Sean Kenney and (assistant scouting director) Wesley Harwell, we were able to put it on display in a big way.
