1. Stats. Some of the stats above were before New Orleans’ loss to Mississippi State where the Privateers had Bulldogs in their grasp only to let things slip away. I was impressed with New Orleans and this won’t be a pushover in any way. They’ve got dudes. Offensively, they struggle a bit because they don’t shoot well at all from inside the arc, 316th in 2-point shooting percentage and they are also incredibly turnover prone, 298th overall. What they do really well is shoot from beyond the arc, 82nd in 3-point shooting and they are top third-ish in offensive rebounding and free throw rate. Defensively, they don’t turn teams over at all, 350th in turnover percentage and 313th in opponent free throw rate. They are terrific at guarding the 3-point shot, which means that Texas Tech is going to need to get offense going in other ways.

2. Scouting. Coleton Benson is a shooter and whoever is guarding him is going to get a workout and run all over the damn court trying to cover him int he half-court. Benson is making 44% of his 3-point shots, has a low usage rate, meaning he’s getting shots off the pass and is a low turnover guy. Thomas is a talented post player, terrific rebounder and gets to the line more than anyone on the team by a long shot. Abass is a load in the paint, making 61% of his shots, and a good rebounder, but is prone to turnovers. I think that Buckley and Pagonis want to be 3-point shooters, but aren’t quite there thus far in the season. Buckley is a high assist player, but he’s also prone to turnovers as well.

3. How They Match Up. Texas Tech needs to start climbing out of their hole and play better. It’s not really that simple and teams definitely have a plan on how to stop them, which I expect New Orleans to do. They don’t have the bodies that Purdue has, but they definitely have pieces to make this difficult for Texas Tech offensively and Texas Tech needs to figure it out. Statistically, Texas Tech should win by 20 points and they are a team that guards the 3-point line well (except for purdue) and Texas Tech can rely on their ability to get offensive boards.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

On the nation’s third longest active non-conference home winning streak, No. 15 Texas Tech is set to host New Orleans at noon on Wednesday at United Supermarkets Arena before playing Wyoming on Sunday afternoon in a pair of Thanksgiving week home games.

The Red Raiders (4-2) split a pair of matchups at the Baha Mar Championship last week, opening with a win over Wake Forest before falling to No. 1 Purdue in the finals. Tech is 3-0 in home games this season and 19-0 in non-conference home games under head coach Grant McCasland. The program, which advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight last season, has not lost a non-conference home game since an overtime loss to Kentucky in 2020. The Red Raiders have won 42 straight non-conference home games, which is only behind Auburn (63) and Baylor (47) for the longest in the nation. New Orleans (2-3) plays at Mississippi State on Monday night before traveling to Lubbock for the noon tipoff on Wednesday while Wyoming (5-1) hosts Denver before making the trip to west Texas.
