Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Nathan Giese:
Texas Tech 42, West Virginia 17: The Mountaineers could catch the Red Raiders sleeping if they clinch a spot in the Big 12 title game Friday night (Arizona must beat Arizona State to do this), but Texas Tech still can’t afford to let up right now, even if that’s the case.
The Parkersburg News and Sentinel’s Spencer Ripchik: Mountaineers intend to create chaos for Texas Tech
“There is an opportunity, I don’t want to say spoiler,” Rich Rodriguez said. “But first off, I say, listen, it’s our last home game. It’s our seniors’ last game. We should have that in mind to play really hard for them. That’s been a theme for it, but also it’s a great opportunity for our program to be on display on national TV against one of the best teams in the country. If you don’t get excited for the challenge, then you’re not who I thought you were. I think our guys, the way that they’ve approached this so far, have been good.”
Blue Gold News’ Bob Hertzel: Senior Day arrives for West Virginia football against Texas Tech
There is no bowl game for this group, so this is it this group/ But they have a chance to do something memorable, to spring an upset on a team that few can argue is the best in the Big 12. To beat Texas Tech would make them part of something that will be talked about for years to come and that will erase some of the scars left behind by a losing season.
“Obviously winning would give us some confidence (moving forward into next year) and be great for the fans,” Rodriguez said. “It would be a great memory for the players, especially the seniors. Some of them have been here only six months but I still want them to remember West Virginia in a great way. A win would be a memory they will have the rest of their life and you can’t duplicate that type of feeling.”
Lubbock Avalanche-Journal’s Don Williams: Winning big new for Texas Tech football fans, and newcomers, too
“I think about that every day,” Boyd said. “It’s crazy. Being at UTEP for three years, we didn’t have much success during the season, but coming here, it’s like everybody’s bought in. That’s what I see (as) like, the difference in the teams. Everyone’s bought in. Everyone trusts each other, loves each other the same. Having those attributes, it can lead to what we’re doing now, and I can see that.”
ESPN’s Bill Connelly: College football Rivalry Week preview: Ohio State-Michigan, Texas A&M-Texas
No. 5 Texas Tech at West Virginia (Saturday, noon, ESPN)
Over the past four weeks, WVU’s defense has made the most tackles for loss in the Big 12, while new quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. has become a more and more explosive passer. The Mountaineers have won two of three since a 2-6 start. Will any of this matter against Texas Tech? Probably not. The Red Raiders are on a different plane of existence in the trenches, and they’ve won four games by an average of 41-9 since quarterback Behren Morton returned from injury.
