Starting 5

1. Stats. Wyoming has got some stats and they run at least 10 deep. They are a terrific offensive rebounding team, 38th in the nation, but maybe struggle to do other things. Only 100th in 3-point percentage and 153rd in 2-point percentage, while they are 301st in free throw percentage. They are top third in turnover percentage and free throw rate, which is what’s keeping them afloat. Defensively, they are FIRST in defending the 3-point line, teams are only making 21%, and they do a good job of limiting opponents on the offensive boards, 70th. They do tend to put teams on the line a ton, 359th overall.

2. Scouting. Some of Wyoming’s stats may be subject to who they have played. They have wins over Northern State, Cal State Fullerton, Austin Peay, Portland, Norfolk State, and Denver. Their only loss is to Sam Houston by 8, the same Bearkat team that we were so impressed with after playing them. Dennis is the scorer without having the ball in his hands, but he’s struggling to make shots from deep, just 30%, but making 71% of his 2-point shots. Walker is the one finding him and he’s got the ball in his hands the most on offense. He’s also not making his 3’s, just 25%, but he’s the passer on the team. Actually, Walker, Rojas, Bennett Meyer and Taylor are all terrific passers, so they must share the ball quite a bit and spot up. The Cowboys really don’t have anyone inside that’s a shot blocker.

3. How They Match Up. No shot-blocker and no big rebounder on the team should mean good things for Texas Tech’s offense. For reference purposes, Wyoming lost to Sam Houston because they absolutely could not hit from outside and put them on the line a ton. Aggressive defending outside is going to be a key as it was against New Orleans. And Texas Tech isn’t getting to the line a ton, but because Wyoming fouls a lot, this would be a good time to change those fortunes.

5. Official Site. The official site has their preview right here:

No. 20 Texas Tech eyes a continuance of its home dominance when it hosts Wyoming at 2 p.m. on Sunday at United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (5-2) extended the nation’s third longest streak to 43 straight non-conference home games after rolling to a 32-point win over New Orleans on Wednesday and are now 4-0 in home games this season and 20-0 in non-conference home games under head coach Grant McCasland. The win streak includes a 96-49 win over the Cowboys last season on November 13, 2024 in a game where JT Toppin recorded his first double-double as a Red Raider with 24 points and 12 rebounds and Christian Anderson made his collegiate debut – scoring nine points and having four assists and three steals after he had missed the first two games of his freshman season.

Wyoming (6-1) is on a two-game winning streak after earning a 101-59 win over Denver on Wednesday and will be playing its second road game of the season. The only loss on the Cowboys resume came with a 78-70 loss at Sam Houston – a team Texas Tech earned a 98-77 win over on Nov. 7 at the USA. The matchup will be the 14th all-time between the two programs with the Cowboys owning a 7-6 all-time advantage but also looking to respond from a 47-point loss to the Red Raiders last season.
