On the Track

The Texas Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams swept the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field titles on Saturday. The women held of BYU by 4.5 points and the men held off Kansas State by 1 point.

Malachi Snow was named the meet’s High Point Performer as he won both the 60m and 60m hurdles (20 points). Snow went 7.43 in the hurdles and 20 mins later clocked in at 6.46 in the 60m. Meanwhile, George Garcia won the 600yd tying his teammate Kyzer Dunbar’s school record of 1:08.14 as Dunbar placed second with a time of 1:08.20. Jonathan Sermes won the men’s triple jump tying Bryce Lamb’s 2013 school record of 16.96m (55-7 ¾). Stephen Mutai captured the 800m title with a time of 1:48.23.

Over on the women’s side, two Red Raiders were crowned champions. Tonie-Ann Forbes dropped a blistering time of 7.91 for a new school record. Ruta Lasmane won her second indoor crown leaping 13.79m (45-3).

The bulk of the men’s point came from the sprints where they totaled 76 points – 20 in the 60m alone. Eight of the 19 events saw the men score in double digits. As far as the women go, the field events totaled 59.5 points, with 23 coming from the high jump. They tallied double digits in five of 19 events.

Such a huge deal for Wes Kittley and the entire staff along with the student athletes. Congrats to all involved. As you may recall, Kittley had fewer scholarships this year to hand out and still winning the conference. He doesn’t slow down. NCAA Indoor Championships begin March 13th in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

On the Hardwood

With 9 seniors the Lady Raiders defeated Arizona State on Senior Day, 58-51 behind 18 points from Jalynn Bristow. Jada Malone scored 11 and Denae Fritz had 10 for the Lady Raiders. As a result, Texas Tech has the No. 5 seed in the Big 12 tgournament and will play the winner of Cincinnati and Kansas State. The Big 12 Tournament starts on Wednesday, March 4th in Kansas City at the T-Mobile Center.

CBS Sports Isaac Trotter has their 25 and 1 with me thinking that Texas Tech would move up 1 or 2 spots and Trotter has them moving up no spots, staying at No. 16

CBS Sports has the winners and losers from the weekend and this is the bit about Texas Tech:

Winner: Wounded Texas Tech won’t go down quietly
Texas Tech clearly did not hear any bell after JT Toppin’s season-ending knee injury. The Red Raiders walked into Hilton Coliseum and emerged with an eyebrow-raising 82-73 victory over No. 4 Iowa State. It’s the Cyclones’ first home loss of the season, and reiterates just how tough of an out these short-handed Red Raiders will be in March. Texas Tech splashed 14 treys. Donovan Atwell continued his magnificent season with six triples and 18 points. Tyeree Bryan, who was buried on the bench for long stretches of Big 12 play, revitalized his season with 10 enormous points and a couple massive treys. Jaylen Petty, Josiah Moseley and Luke Bamgboye were also outstanding in expanded roles. Texas Tech has now bulldozed Kansas State, Cincinnati and Iowa State in three games without Toppin.

The Red Raiders likely do not have the firepower to win six in a row in March Madness without its All-American big fella, but this outfit is tougher than a two-dollar steak. — Isaac Trotter

On the Diamond

The On the Diamond post which was to cover both softball and baseball is fully updated from this weekend’s actions. All in one place. This was a lot more work than expected, but that’s okay. It will be easier when softball isn’t playing double-headers and it’s just one game for each team. As an aside, softball starts conference play this weekend, heading to Houston to take on the Cougars, Friday through Sunday, while baseball hosts Penn State this weekend, Friday through Sunday.
