Game Links:
Tortilla Tossin’ Player of the Game: Christian Anderson was electric, 11 of 19 from the field, 3 of 8 from deep, 11 boards, 7 assists, and 6 turnovers. A double-double and nice to see Anderson doing the dirty work with those boards. And Anderson really took over in the 2nd half, scoring 19 of those 31 on 6 of 10. That’s efficient work.
The Motion:
- Good morning. I didn’t get to see a second of the game other than the extended highlights this morning. Had the Chamber of Commerce Banquet last night and did a lot of chambering, commercing, and banqueting.
- Texas Tech dominated the boards. 40 rebounds to just 28 for Cincinnati including 12 offensive boards to 11 for the Bearcats. That led to a 19 to 8 2nd chance points advantage for Texas Tech.
- I’d also probably add that getting to the line and not fouling Cincinnati was important. Texas Tech was 16 of 20 from the charity stripe and Cincy was 10 of 13. It helped that Miller played with 4 fouls.
- Just watching highlights, I felt like Cincinnati was doubling on players that would eventually leave open along the 3-point line, so the rotations just weren’t there and that’s probably a lot of the 2nd chance points, just being out of place.
- Watts looks great 2 games in a row, 13 points on a much taller opponent and he only shot 1 3-point shot, but was 5 of 6 from the line and had 5 rebounds. After the game, McCasland said that Watts was getting cute on how he was doing things, with a bit of flair perhaps, and McCasland challenged him to be on balance and just do the simple things the right way and he’d be fine. Texas Tech needs a solid 2nd or 3rd scorer and with Atwell and Watts you can be there.
- The 3-headed monster of Bamgboye, Moseley, and Akuentok made it through a good test yesterday. Cincinnati is a big lineup and they did enough to win. Moseley has some legitimate skills to his game and I don’t know that we’d get to see those skills if Toppin wasn’t hurt. He only played 16 minutes, but think he can play more and saw where Watts and Moseley were on the floor together to sort of replicate that Toppin type of lineup. Bamgboye still gets lost sometimes defensively, but 3 blocks is something no one else can really do, although to be fair, Moseley had 3 blocks as well last night.
- The reason Cincinnati stayed in the game was that they didn’t turn the ball over, just 3 for the game. They didn’t shoot particularly well, just 43% in the 1st half and 38% in the 2nd, but not turning over possessions helps a ton.
- Head coach Grant McCasland: “Our team really played together. They played with a consistent effort to improve. That’s how we played. Christian Anderson was tremendous. He settled us and LeJuan Watts was awesome in the second half offensively getting foul pressure. Couple things I told our team before the game, how well we rebound and we outrebounded them 40-24 and 19-8 on second-chance points. Donovan Atwell had a couple huge offensive rebounds. Then I thought we needed to guard them without fouling and we ended up making more free throws than they shot. We haven’t done that in back-to-back games all year and we did it. Those two areas were big for me and I’m thrilled with how our guys competed.”
- Advanced Stats: Atwell +4.0; Moseley +2.9; Anderson +2.4; Bamgboye +0.6; Bryan +0.7; Watts -1.1; Akuentok -1.2; and Petty -2.4.
- Up next? Texas Tech hits the road to take on Iowa State and Hilton Coliseum on Saturday, February 28th with tip-off at 3:00 p.m. and the game broadcast on CBS.
